Hello everyone. The series is growing. My character is becoming a more and more unfortunate. I’m Eri Kitamura, the voice actress for Homura.
It’s been three years since the first Senran Kagura was made. Can you tell us how did you feel when accepting the performance offer in this Bakunyu Hyper Battle game?
I haven’t thought this series would go this far. I tried my best recording my lines. This may be a spoiler… but after I finished recording, the Senran Kagura team told me that “well… maybe… there will be another Senran Kagura title”. Based on the philosophy that the Senran Kagura series will never end, all the staff continuing to work enthusiastically on the game’s production. I can feel this atmosphere when recording, knowing the series will continue – and the staff confirmed this in the end. Rather than feeling surprised, I expect more from the franchise and hope to see more of Homura’s moves in Estival Versus.
What do you think about Homura? What is the similarities and differences between you and Homura in terms of hobbies and characteristics?
Homura is designed to be the rival of Asuka, who is simply maintaining a high level of motivation and pride. Homura is much more serious, more powerfully energetic than the other characters. Despite that fact that she’s gloomy, you can feel her strong power. Homura is created with the nuance of being both a “cool beauty” and her bond with infinite power. As the series progresses, her ‘spin-off mode’ gets stronger, such as an increasing desire for meat, special skills in eating crabs, and so on. Homura started to shift towards this image, since the very beginning (the first game) However the change was unexpectedly accepted and fans were asking for more changes. The scenario team were happy about this type of feedback, and started to implement them in new storylines. Sometimes even I feel surprised that Homura shows certain facial expressions, or that she looks human or girl-like at all. This affects the preference (of the fans) of using Homura as a favourite character, and they will develop more skills by playing as Homura. We hear the requests from fans who have been playing the series, that they want to occasionally hear more of Kitamura(‘s voice). I’m really glad to perform Homura’s role and to be able to discover more and more about Homura.
Homura’s hobby is battling. What is your hobby?
Well we are also battling everyday in the voice acting industry. My interests are in games and the Nijigen world (two dimensional world, such as manga, games etc). So I also play fighting games. Although I like playing games, I’m not good at it. I like fighting games or puzzle games which have a straightforward game mode. I play games for hours when not busy and I feel games can help me relieve stress. That’s why playing games is my hobby.
Do you enjoy Homura’s favourite food? Can you tell us your favourite food?
I tend to be fussy about my food. I don’t mean that I will never eat certain food because I don’t like them though. If I get obsessed by certain type of food, I will keep eating it. For example, if I like eating meat – Homura’s favourite food, I will keep eating meat until I change obsession to cakes, at which point I will forget about meat completely and start eating cakes. But Homura likes meat so much that she could eat it to death. She likes it to the extent of cherishing meat for the rest of her life. Liking certain food may appear to be our common interest, but actually we are different – my favourite food lasts for only a short period of time, whilst Homura favourite food lasts forever.
Which do you prefer, crabs or shrimps?
I’m not good at eating shelled creatures but I like crabs and shrimps. But aren’t crabs expensive? I’ve rarely eaten crabs. Rather, I prefer crab sticks (finely pulverized white fish flesh shaped to resemble crab leg meat). Are you with me? Crab sticks are convenient, much cheaper than crabs, and are good snacks. I feel that crab sticks have overwhelming advantages. I like flavour of crab, and so I order crab miso soup in sushi restaurants all the time. I like shrimps and Pandalus (prawns).
Have you had part-time jobs before, like Homura does? Could you share some episodes of your laborious part-time work?
I have done more office work than labour work as part-time jobs. I used to work as a tele-appointer and customer complaints handler. Surprisingly, I did these jobs in a humble manner. (I always say) “I sincerely apologise for the trouble. It was my fault. Please accept my apology.” These types of jobs suit me pretty well. For the tele-appointer job, I worked for an online computer accessories shop (USB devices and other hardware) where I place orders from customers on the phone. It was a interesting job. Sometimes I had customers complaining, saying I have apologised too much. It becomes my funny story after leaving that job. In Homura’s case, Homura tries her best to continue to live on, and when thinking of past hardships, it makes her smile thinking how her life has improved.
The stage of Senran Kagura Estival Versus is on the beach in midsummer. In real life, do you like going to the beach or going mountain hiking?
Well, the beach or the mountains… I prefer indoors (laughs). If I have to choose between the mountains and the beach… if this is my “choice of girls”, I would choose the beach. Things I don’t like about mountains: there are too many bugs; it’s too easy to get mosquito stings; I’m nervous about the changing weather; mountain hiking is exhausting; I’m female. Although I prefer the beach, I’m not good at swimming so I would rather enjoy the view.
Please tell us the highlights of Estival Versus
Think about the increasing number of characters and academies. I didn’t expect that there would be 25 characters in total. I wonder if players will still choose Homura. It feels like an AKB selection (really famous Japanese girl group). These characters in this Bakunyu Hyper Battle game are charming for their “plentiful?” boobs. These charming characters and character designs have distinct colours for different academies. I bet you can find a few favourite characters. In Estival Versus there are 5 new characters. I have confirmed with the staff that the character design has matsuri (Japanese festival) concepts. I personally like matsuri costumes very much and it looks powerful, masculine and lively. I think the design is suitable. I’m also interested in the characters’ own attacking effects. Some characters’ weapons are really special. Say, the weapon for Kafuru is surprisingly a dolphin. I’m interested in how the dolphin launches attacks. The graphical effects on PS4 should be responsive and I’m looking forward to seeing the attacking effects. I really want you guys to check these out. Moreover, the way that the costumes are affected has been enhanced so that they tear off completely, can be made transparent and get dirty. That’s another possible highlight. Please enjoy.
Which new character catches your attention?
It’s difficult to choose. Shiori Izawa from my studio has also joined in with the voice acting work – performing Kafuru as I mentioned before. I’m trying to imagine how her voice sounds. The dolphin’s voice is played by Shirai-kun. I’m interested in the combination of their voices in fighting scenes. If someone is to replace or fix my voice, I would recommend Kikuko who is the voice actress for Ryoki. I like her very much. Her live performance is quite popular. I think she matches the feelings and mood of Ryoki, so Ryoki catches my attention too.
Which conversations or scenes left you with the biggest impression?
It would still be the scenes where Homura is crazy about meat. I was also happy when recording those scenes. What’s more, I was impressed by the the new “touching system” that everyone likes, where players can manipulate the boobs and the boobs jiggle on their own. I’ve heard that the touching system has been made even more crazy. Isn’t the production team stupid to make the system even more crazy? For the most part the Senran Kagura series has been focusing on the top half of the body. What shocked me is, in this game, you can slap their ass. Really? Is the series now focusing on the bottom half too? Homura’s voice in the changing room is cute as usual. What caught my attention this time, is when you zoom in on her body, Homura will say “perhaps there is gravy on me?” I thought, what is that? Does she like meat too much? She might be talking about the gravy spilt on her when she was eating meat. I can visualise these random scenes when recording the lines. It’s made by the Senran Kagura team indeed. Good job. Create more next time.
In the Senran Kagura series, you can change the costumes for the characters. Which costumes do you like to wear and which ones do you want Homura to wear?
I don’t want to try any costume on myself. They are not for me. For Homura, I want her trying something like Yuru-chara (a large character costume, usually a mascot). It would be better to cut a hole in the mascot costume so that she can show her face. Those giant sized costumes don’t necessarily relate to Homura’s own costumes. Homura likes meat so why not put her in a mascot costume in the shape of a chop with a bone, and her head sticking out? How about that?
During the battles in Senran Kagura, costumes will get ripped off. Have you ever experienced in real life, your clothes being unexpectedly broken or ripped?
Well, never (with a tone of anger).
What do you like about Senran Kagura?
It’s a difficult question. I can’t name a specific perspective, but the various mini systems are good. The character designs change every time and this is even attractive to females. For me, I like the soundtracks such as the theme songs. I really want to show you the game’s PV for Estival Versus, where you will hear Asuka’s elegant voice. I want to enjoy the whole pack of soundtracks. I really like to enjoy the voices and images in this album because there are so many charming songs.

It’s an easy game to start. The number of characters has increased to 25 in total. You will find many favourite characters, witness their changes and all kinds of battles along their character routes. You will always have fun no matter how many times you play this game. Concluding this game in one word is difficult. I don’t know what other voice actress’ concluded. But as Homura’s voice actress, I feel the responsibilities for promoting her. So my conclusion is: meat (also contains the meaning of sexual feelings).
What are your expectations of Senran Kagura in the future?
I’m expecting a mini game collection. I think those Chibi characters in all Senran Kagura special editions are cute. The mainstream size for game figurines in the industry is still full-size. So it will be great if we can have some big headed figurines and create some mobile games to play with those figurines. I want to create an environment where players can always see the game characters, Homura and her friends wherever they go. Also, as an actress playing this series for so long, since the number of characters has increased a lot, it’s time for a film edition. The disadvantage is that creating the transformations for 25 characters requires a lot of work. Go go film edition!
What about a 3D film edition?

What does “Bakunyu” mean to you?
