I also really like the designs of FFVIII and X.

This is not initially a bad thing though, considering that FF was originally like that.
Also I chuckled when you said XIII was serious. I find 40% of it to be overly dramatic that forms some sort of fog to determine whether or not sarcasm was in play for a story driven forced linear game such as that.

Regarding Iris, I'm pretty sure she has a deeper personality. I'm sure she and Noctis have been good friends since they met (in the anime) and she has a hell of a crush on him. That's actually kinda normal but has the obviousness of a Japanese anime. That stuff is everywhere. I'm sure we'll all grow to like her in some fashion once we see more than a single in action scene with her and Noctis going on a "date".
And quickly touching on Noctis cringing at anyone touching him, probably a mental scar thing from his childhood injuries. I know a couple people like that that can't stand being touched because they were bullied pretty badly.

I'm not so sure anymore if I should buy it. It feels a bit too old school and segmented to me. I'd go crazy with all those loading times (even if short) in between these rather small segments of the world. The city and dungeons also are really barren by today's standards. Which won't really quench my thirst for exploration.

FFXII was a good game, imo it had one of the best bounty hunting quests ever in any FF game by far. Story takes awhile from one to get into, but it's a good lengthy game nevertheless along with one of the best summoning animations in it's time (they are still good till this day). The combat system turned a few off due to the awkward approach of battling monsters yet it was still good somehow.
I've heard about that. Times have changed if Nomura had to get character influence from another (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it's where you get the influence from). Aside from looks and physique, personality isn't so far closely to the character from the manga/anime. At least from what I can tell, Noctis doesn't suffer from friendship problems nor having superiority complex with childhood dilemma and clan stigma.
FF4 was an incredible game (can't speak of Phantasy Star II since I've never played it) but if it has some mix to those, sounds great.
That's why I mentioned he was also similar to Ren from Pirates of Dark Water in some ways.
Phantasy Star II's story was pretty heavy for its time with a solid cast of characters, but if you play, be forewarned... the dungeons are big. Think Final Fantasy II, but instead of encounter room placements, there are pitfalls that take you down a floor if you haven't memorized the map.
There is a lesser-known Generation 2 remake that exists on an imported PS2 with enhanced graphics and sound. I dunno if the fan translations have ever been finished though... but yeah, we're getting off-topic.
