Played the Gwent Beta for a while. Since you can already spend real money on the game, they will probably go for a rolling release and at some point – out of the blue – release v 1.0.
Overall it’s a fairly different game compared to the version in the Witcher 3. I mean the base gameplay loop is still the same, but that’s about it. While the “original” had mostly plain cards with nothing but an attack value, a few cards with generic effects and a hand full of special cards, it’s almost the complete opposite for this game, cards without any sort of effect are pretty rare and effects are a lot more varied, also more drawing, mulligan phases etc. I mean they had to do something, since the original version was way too simplistic for competitive play, but “easy to learn” is no longer true… you basically have to constantly hover over cards to figure out what they are actually doing. And then of course study the meta etc., though if you have no aspiration to climb the ranked ladder, it’s not a big deal.
So if you did not like the original Gwent, but enjoy TCGs in general, this might be worth a try. If you don’t like competitive card games, this is most probably not going to change your mind…
Personally I’m somewhat disappointed CDPR follows the standard (monetisation) schema for this type of game so closely. You start out with a bunch of crappy decks and getting more cards is kinda slow unless you open your wallet… though if you mill a lot of cards you should be able to build one good deck, though this will probably the only playable deck left. That’s what I ended up doing… now I have a decent deck, but can’t play anything else really (King Bran discard… fairly consistent and amusing, no clue if it’s actually viable at high level though) Was hoping they’d e.g. let you choose one faction after the tutorial with all it's cards included and you can buy additional factions. If they want to extract more money from players they could monetise the animated cards feature (like they already do anyway)
There is no single player to speak of atm, except for some tutorials and a few AI matches to unlock additional leader cards. So who knows how the campaigns will turn out… wouldn’t expect much more than Hearthstone.
Imo it's fun, but I usually just aim for that one free card keg (booster pack) a day, have to win 6 rounds for that, so usually 3-5 matches.
