Mass Effect: Andromeda Thread

That sucks, it was my first ME and honestly, I did rather enjoy it.

Try going thru the previous games then, looking past how weak the gameplay of the first game was compared to the later ones, they are all worth playing.

I got a PS4 last week and got this game for free and managed to try it out over the weekend. Once I got past the occasional bugs and animation issues (which are exactly as distracting as people say) the overall gameplay feels fine but not great, Im still trying to get used to the new combat features (especially since I played the previous games on pc with a keyboard and mouse) and exploration feels like a bad combination of the different exploration/mining/scanning mechanics of the previous games though I am sure Ill get used to it in a while.

My biggest complaint so far is how unoriginal all the squadmates feel; I know bioware LOVES to recycle character types for party members but it seems way too prominent in this game, especially with Cora and Liam being the usual good-looking human teammate you get early on with the guys being boring to talk to and the girl being a bit of a bitch with a REALLY nice ass. I also dont really like the writing of the dialogue, while its nice that they FINALLY fixed the dialogue wheel to make it impossible to select the wrong conversation option when pressing the skip conversation button (something I did very often in the previous games), the way characters react to things happening dont sound realistic and sometimes contradicts what actually happened.

I also dont like that they got rid of the classes from the older games and made it so that Ryder has access to all the different powers since it takes away the fun of replaying the game with a new class. Ill probably just finish the game once for each gender and never play it again.

The Mass Effect team would like to continue the series. Though from the looks of things, we won't see another one for awhile so yeah you are right.
Casey Hudson is back, so he will likely 'reboot' the series, and everything will likely be fine in the end. But it won't happen any sooner than at least 5 years, probably. It kind of also depends on how well Anthem does. If it's a big hit, they might focus on that and keep Mass Effect in the closet for a bit longer.

The Mass Effect challenge was too large for the new BioWare studio... The team was good for multiplayer, not anything else, and it shows. The main good thing about Andromeda is the gameplay. Other than that, we all read what happened in the Kotaku article. They were too inexperienced to handle the transition from Unreal Engine to Frostbite. Mac Walters practically mitigated a much bigger disaster in 18 months, but the result was still not good enough for Mass Effect standards, so the studio has now practically been closed/dismantled. It's a shame really, because they were not a bad studio, but simply had no ground to stand on because of their inexperience. They were thrown into a swimming pool expecting to dive and grab things on the bottom, while only knowing a basic breaststroke.

Update from the studio. Very unfortunate news.

Well that's it. Next game it is.
And from what i've been understanding about the MP on the other forums, the MP isn't really getting anything more either. They are still releasing stuff people datamined, but nothing actually new coming there, either. like after the last few characters that people already know about, which are still just more humans with the same powers everyone already has, aka, neither a new character, nor new abilities, that's it for the game entirely.

And let me tell you, people are PISSED we aren't getting that Quarian Ark dlc.

And doubly PISSED that the only other Milky Way race we get in MP is freaking BATARIANS.

And rightfully so... Quarians were one of the most beloved species in the series, and Batarians one of the least liked... Batarians practically fall into the category of Vorcha, Varen and Thresher Maws. So the things are completely skewed.

Mass Effect is ruined. In five years, I hope we can all forget Andromeda and pretend it never happened.

I'm actually wondering if the best course of action now is a remake of the original trilogy, fixing everything in each game;

All of them having combat & graphics similar to Andromeda
ME1 having the Mako work practically like the Nomad but with weapons
ME2 having extended RPG elements.
ME3 fixed ending

After almost 50 hours, I managed to finish the game and overall, I'm mostly satisfied with the game. When I can look past the many bugs, it plays pretty well and does have some great moments similar to the previous games even if the overall story doesnt feel all that different. If it released a bit later with less bugs and some less predictable stories, it would probably been better received.

The combat is easily the best in the series and I can tell that if I played multiplayer, the overall game would be more enjoyable but I dont really plan on spending much more time in the game since I want to play other things. The exploring and driving around is REALLY boring and I HATED how much SAM keeps reminding me that I can mine the area for resources (I KNOW I CAN MINE THE AREA! WHY DO YOU THINK I SET UP THE MINING SCANNER!).

I also appreciated that there is so much to do and I'm sure I can spend many hours just doing the many side quests but I honestly felt that there was TOO MANY side missions. I was overwhelmed that the game kept giving me side quests and mostly ignored them. At least with the earlier games, there was a long term benefit for doing side missions but here, they all seem completely pointless. It doesnt help that many side missions require a lot of driving around or going to different planets, especially the movie night mission. All the side missions really broke the pace of the main story for me.

Even after a lot of time with the team, it was still hard for me not to see all of them as just copies of the character types from the teams from the previous series.

Jaal was the only squadmate I really liked since while he is filling in the role of the alien teammate with the most experience fighting the main bad guys (like Javik from 3), I liked how he was always being polite and trying to fit in with the rest of the team.

Drack reminded me too much of Wrex being the old krogan who deeply cares for his species and even their attempt to set him apart by making more of an adventurer unlike Wrex who went to politics, I still had a hard time seeing him as nothing more than a replacement. I still liked bringing him around in missions though.

While I also liked bringing Vetra in missions, even with a different backstory, she still felt like a replacement for Garrus as the turian teammate with connections and a distinct visor.

Cora was my favorite squadmate to bring around (and not just so I can look at her butt) but I didnt really find her backstory to interesting. I did like how much friendlier she is to Ryder compared to Miranda.

Liam was largely uninteresting but he redeemed himself a bit for me during his loyalty mission which was surprisingly entertaining.

PB is completely forgettable; I rarely bring her in missions and havent even done her loyalty mission.

The rest of the Tempest crew are just the same characters from the previous games particularly Suvi and Gil; AGAIN for the 2nd consecutive ME game, the mechanic guy is the gay LI and this is the 3rd time they made the female assistant the lesbian LI, is it really going to be the trend for gay LIs in the series?

The more I think about it, the more the story felt like it just combined the premise of the previous games by having 1's focus on exploration and discovery and mixing it with the idea of building allies to take on the main enemies like in 2 and 3. When the story moved on to trying to find Meridian, a type of alien technology built by an extinct civilization that the villain wants to use to control the galaxy, I was reminded of KOTOR which had the EXACT SAME GOAL. It doesnt help that Meridian is very similar in concept to Requiem from Halo 4 and the fact that the Remnant feels very similar in concept and design to the Forunners (to be fair to Bioware, the Didact from Halo 4 has very similar motives from Harbinger and has the same voice actor). Overall the main story was well presented even if it was very unoriginal.

Well no. Because the story mode is open world. Multiplayer is tight enclosed spaces, and their only focus on the gameplay was "BUT JETPACKS" which all but destroyed the multiplayer, which is basically ME3MP, but everything designed with jetpacks in mind. Meaning maps are multitiered to take advantage of jetpacks, but in practice, it now means there's always enemies shooting you from every angle, and trying to fly around with the jetpack will just get you totally shredded unless you are THE dedicated jet trooper who can spec for like 75% damage resistance while hovering.

To put that into perspective

I played ME3MP for YEARS. only reason I'm not STILL playing it is because my 360 barely works anymore.
I played MEAMP for maybe a couple weeks, haven't touched it since.

Doesn't help that the game was horribly imbalanced in the beginning, with only melee doing any substantial damage to enemies, and the new loot system is so stacked there's no point even trying to work towards anything in MP.

God MEAMP pisses me off.

On the crew, I liked Suvi, and really wish you could actually follow through with the offer to take her out as part of the ground crew. I bring Vetra and...drak, whatever his name is, just because they are funny talking to each other, but I have like no connection to any of the squadmates. at least Cora or whatever her name was wasn't a horribly racist cunt like Ashley from the original trilogy.

only reason to do PB's mission is for the Remnant VI tech drone skill. Beyond that, don't care about her either.

I also really hated how all aliens LITERALLY look the same in Andromeda. All salarians are Mordin, all Krogan are Wrex, all Turians are Garrus, even the asari, who are just blue humans, all have the exact same face. I mean hell the only way to tell not-javik apart from the other blue people is his little scouter. There's no NPC variety in Andromeda.

Now that I think about it, the 3 factions in andromeda are not anywhere near as fun to fight against as the 4 enemy types in 3. Maybe spending time in multiplayer would end up being boring for me really quick. I still like the combat overall and maybe by being forced to use different classes and powers unlike in single player where I only ever used cloak, charge and concussion shot as my main powers, I could finally try out most of the abilities the game has. Il try out multiplayer myself sometime but not now.

I didnt notice that all the aliens looked alike at first but once I realized that every asari except PB looked exactly the same, it became really distracting for me. I didnt really notice the repeat character designs with the other species but I did get distracted with how every angaran sounded like they all spoke the same accent. It sort of makes sense but it would have been nice to have some variety.
