Nioh General Discussion

You do realize that the Abyss is an entirely optional mode, correct?

As with all things that are optional if they feed into the core mechanics then I'm gonna do them anyway.... I'm gonna be miserable while do it but I'l still do it.

Take Nier Automata for example.... the side quests are entirely optional... However you get a bunch of resources for doing them... said resources can then be used to to complete the main quests.... infact not doing the side quest can leave you significantly underpowered. Hence they're not really optional....

That's usually how "Optional" Content works in any Game with Abstract Progression.

I mean, but that's just it. The Abyss mode is "literally" completely optional and most of those resources can be acquired in the main game itself. You are just fighting bosses in different floors that die just as fast for when you encounter them in story mode's NG+. The only thing that's really different is smithing texts, acquiring different gear/graces that were not present in the main game, or enhancing present gear from defiled and higher level items drops, but yet those equipment sets or higher level items are not a big thing to make it a huge game changer since what the main game gives you can still steam roll everything else. I'm still some rolling main game equipment on Abyss.

You can beat the game with +25-+30 gear in highest NG+, where you put your stats in, weapon that you use etc.

Yeah, but Nioh's not like that. The Abyss wasn't even in the game until the final DLC patch, and the only exclusives are RNG smithing texts that are pretty much entirely useless.

The question is.... is it practical to beat the game at that level ?

I've gone through this with Dark Souls... they say you can beat the game at level 1.... and you can.... but what they don't mention is how impractical it is to do so and how unlikely it is to do so if its your first play through.

But the part that really got me was it sort of a Cheap trick... when I looked up how to they beat the game without leveling up.... it turns out they do actually level up.... their Equipment. And then they use Rings and to increase their Stats.

They bamboozled me on a technicality.

Edit:
Is there some long ass In Depth Review of Nioh I can watch to find out exactly how many of this stuff works ?

Or maybe a lets play with some insightful commentary ?

If you want to be able to play the game flawlessly in a first playthrough, forget it.

Abyss mode was not made to people who just got the game, abyss mode is for people that enjoyed the game enough to finish in all difficulties and are looking for extra juicy stuff to do.

The game is technical, is a team ninja game we're talking about here, the game has mechanics for days, and you won't be able to figure them out in the first five minutes, the game gives you the ability to respec your character from the get go, you can try out different builds, playstyles. And you definetly don't need to even get close to the abyss mode to get good at the game.

You can just play through the main missions and you won't be underleveled, i recommend playing the sidemissions because they add a lot to the game (new spirits, more dialogue, more fun).

As I said before... if the optional content feeds back into the Core Mechanics then I'm gonna do them.

That means if they offer any form of XP, Currency or Items at all... that can then be used elsewhere in the game... then I'm gonna do them.

Its not because I'm a completionist.
Its because every single RPG I've played does a pretty crappy job of ensuring that I only encountered enemies that are suited for whatever power level my character is. Things like this are basically guaranteed in nonlinear games.

You know what would be nice.... a special "Level Scaling" mode.... if I never have to worry about running into damage sponges then I'l have no reason to go slogging through Optional Content.

Not really. The game will ensure that you're ready for a challenge by giving mechanics that allow you to overcome the challenge switftly.

Yeah, levels will do a difference in the damage output? sure, but being aware on how the game works will give you an edge over the level, and that will be true at least for the main playthrough. Being able to parry, using elemental damage smartly, or even using the right buffs, and that is something you'll get easily, properly being able to control your ki and whatnot.

You're thinking with a very narrow mindset when you say that, because you're ignoring the foundation of the core mechanics of the game.

Mechanics meaning nothing in the face raw numbers.

Dragons Dogma and Nier Automata had fantastic mechanics but poorly distributed numerical attributes essentially made them pointless.

And honestly.... I think quite a number of gamers would be upset if it didn't work that way. It would be weird to design a game with Abstract Progression only to have that feature have no real impact on the game... I mean if they're goint to make it that way why not save themselves the extra unnecessary programming and testing to include Abstract Progression and in the first place.... it makes sense to just leave it out.

I've heard the "The Levels don't make or break the game." Before many many times..... This statement has varying degrees of Inaccuracy in every RPG I've tried.

Well that's not quite true, is it?

You can also get exclusive smithing texts that are fixed drops!
Since it really looks like you can get texts for everything you couldn't craft before, some of the random drops are useful too. Certainly more relevant for some weapons than others. E.g the texts for Bloodstained Cleaver, Taro Tachi, Jiro Tachi and Futsonomitama are Abyss exclusive and those are 4 of the 5 Top Odachis.

And I'm pretty sure some of the new star rolls on accessories are exclusive to the Abyss (eg. Increase Attack(+ Value)) and the new Grace sets obviously.

That being said the only reason to play the Abyss is… to play the Abyss. You don't even have access to 97% of the floors before you beat the game on the highest difficulty. Floor 31 where relevant gear for Way of the Nioh starts to drop isn't easier than most of the “normal” endgame content and the drops actually are slightly worse. It's really just for people that got through all the available content and are still not sick of the game XD

edit: typos…

So I tried NiOh on Steam a few days ago (yeah, I said a few days ago). It's the paid version.

It's incredible. As soon as I got to the stage loading screen I can press X immediately, I barely had to wait at all. Had no problems with gameplay and killed Onryoki boat boss yesterday, sigh I should of waited man and grab the Steam version instead.

well if it's the abyss we're talking about , the only purpose i see for that place is turning divines into ethereals so forging armors and weapons have meaning , even now. maybe they could've have been more open with floor restrictions but it is what it is. but thanks to abyss my mid heaven susanoo build is coming along just fine.

Nioh on PC even plays well on lower end machines. I have a decent card and 16GB of RAM that are bottlenecked by a very old and underpowered CPU. Have to dial things back but it runs at 60fps nigh constantly and loads into stages are pretty much instantaneous. Bravo.

Lol I always find Team Ninjas settings layout so cheesy. Always looks like it was whipped out in Winforms lol

Dude, the steam version feels so much better. But man....going through the whole game again. I feel so under level and weird at the same time without all the gear setup I use and I recently played NiOh last week on the PS4. I feel high-end but watered down at the same time lol.

If only there was a save transfer. Was going through the Abyss floors.

Hopefully a game trainer comes out quick

So apparently Nioh Complete IS on PS4 as well... Even though literally none of the twitter posts advertising it or any other marketing things about it said it was for anything other than PC via Steam.(idk about trailers, I haven't watched any of them)

Talk about failing to market the game, I understand it going to PC is a big deal and all but to completely exclude that a PS4 version also exists is a poor decision.

EDIT: Just watched Launch trailer and yup also only claims it's on Steam wow

I was running Nioh on PC with lowest settings, and it kept crashing on "Way of the Omnyo: Veteran." I finally raised all the options to "medium" and turned on ambient occlusion, and then it worked fine. Has anyone noticed similar bugs or can anyone replicate this on their machine?

Let's start from this point: I adore this game!!!!!

I already love the sengoku period (after I played samurai warriors 4 I wanted to know the most I could find about that period). When they announced a team ninja action game in ancient Japan, I was shocked XD

I loved it and I just recently bought the season pass.
I completed the first 2 DLCs and was about to start the third one.
I also enjoyed some time and some grinding with friends.

I could go on forever saying how much I love this game, but I would repeat myself too much XD

It's definitely another masterpiece from Team ninja

Well, I never played onimusha, so...

I have not played the souls series either, but I still had a very good vibe from the gameplay and the setting

The boss also reminded me of some ninja gaiden battles XD
