maybe up to 4 max I think, even 4 is hard to keep as top all time, but having only 1 would put someone at a mental disadvantage if that main gets crushed too easily by someone from the first set.

In a tournament scenario its nice to have a pocket character but in my case I play 9 characters lol

I have 3 that I'm comfortable with now (Honoka, Hitomi, Marie Rose) and 5 others that I'm working on (Hayabusa, Akira, Kokoro, Brad Wong and one of Leon/Bayman).

Beyond that, the issue is making sure you're sharp against the remaining characters, I know I don't feel like going through each moveset and practicing one by one against each move. v_v;

I feel confident with 5 (Marie, Kasumi, Ayane, Phase 4 and Leifang) and the remaining ones I am currently practising (Kokoro, Helena, Honoka, Bayman)

Going through every moveset isnt necessary, just fight the characters and at some point you'll recognize a lot of their moves and capabilities. The only time I go to lab is to see if a move is safe or not

Hah! I knew I wasn't crazy. So just fighting against the remaining characters on the hardest level will suffice? I know it's the computer, but facing the moves at random gives a good real-fight feel rather than practicing one by one. That way, as you said, you'll start to see patterns and you can develop an unconscious, correct reaction in response to those moves.
