There are many answers to this question. For one, as @Brute states, video games (especially in the West) are far more mainstream than they used to be. That translates to a lot more events and popularity. The reason why people within certain groups of a fanbase are considered morons is because they are prone to cognitive dissonance. In addition, these groups are quick to point out potential flaws and then ride it all to hell in order to create a bandwagon effect, often filled with decidedly misinformed perceptions and beliefs. They will do this, even when a game like DOA6 is only... 10% complete in its development.
