There are many answers to this question. For one, as @Brute states, video games (especially in the West) are far more mainstream than they used to be. That translates to a lot more events and popularity. At the same time, it also attracts the lowest common-denominator or people generally ignorant of how the gaming cultures (let alone competitive aspects) really work. CONTINUE -

Then you also have fanbases. Within these fanbases, you have specific communities assigned to them. Some are reasonable and are just looking to have fun in the grand scheme of things. Others? They may love (or hate) a series to the point where they obsess over certain elements of it on a daily basis, almost to the point of it being obsessive. CONTINUE -

The reason why people within certain groups of a fanbase are considered morons is because they are prone to cognitive dissonance. In addition, these groups are quick to point out potential flaws and then ride it all to hell in order to create a bandwagon effect, often filled with decidedly misinformed perceptions and beliefs. They will do this, even when a game like DOA6 is only... 10% complete in its development.
