Now that the men got some more muscle definition, I wonder if they'll make the girls a little more defined too. This DOA 5mod looks pretty good, it's not too much:

What's already noticable in the gameplay demo is that they completely remodelled the arms and hands of Helena. So fingers crossed that they remodel the girls' bodies to look more fit and those of actual fighters too.

I think TN is well advised to more strictly separate the fighting game DOA series and the softcore porn DOA series going forward. The lines of both series were more and more blurred in recent years and with DOA5LR and DOAX3 they practically melted together.
I still shake my head when people constantly use that DOAX popularity poll to infer the popularity of characters in the DOA fighting game series. That poll asked DOAX fans for their favorite girls to bring to DOAX, it does not in any way represent what the majority of DOA fans think and, no, Marie Rose and Honoka are certainly not the most popular DOA characters now. TN themselves seemed to be a bit confused in that regard for a while however...
That clear separation is more advantageous than before after DOAX became more and more weird and creepy. TN already knew well enough to not even attempt to release the game outside Asia and now with the addition of that, let's call it "Molest Mode", it's not even in that form available on consoles anymore but only as a PC browser gacha game. If there are people who like that sort of thing and if it rakes in lotsa money, alright, but better leave it clearly separated from the fighting game series.
There's actually a great, very underrated fighter underneath the oversexualized surface. It always breaks my heart when I try to talk about DOA to other gamers and they either don't know it (but they do know Tekken and Soul Calibur) or they know it as the "Titty Fighter".
I'm someone who actually always liked DOA being sexy and who actually also liked the first DOAX...it's really gone a little overboard in the meantime though... I think sexyness in moderation will do the game good in the future and is a good compromise for every DOA fan.

At this point, it may be wise to just see what TN has up their sleeve. Point being, they only went as far as to state and showcase (to a degree) that the sexuality is not quite... "gone." It is present but they are trying to be a bit more passive about it. Or rather, not be as overly assertive about it as they were in DOA5LR with a handful of a choices of purchasable costumes when concerning the newly announced DOA6.

Lots of pages on this thread, so I may have missed a potential answer. I will post my question anyway.

What examples are there in the past of a fighting game...
  1. increasing its sales; and
  2. creating more competitive acceptance and turnout
...by altering its visuals? There seems to be a lot of talk of wanting to draw in a wider audience and competitive scene, but I'm curious as to what success story can be pointed to as evidence this works.

...Dead or Alive 5?

DOA6 will be released in early 2019, assuming that there will be no delays. A lot can happen between now and then. There are a few sides here:
1). Folks who believe that DOA6 staff are conspiring to appease a specific vocal minority (whom may or may actually play the game on any competent basis).
2). Folks in the FGC outside of DOA's group who are little too enthusiastic about the little news we have concerning sexualization, claiming that "DOA has grown up" or some nonsense like that (Which is a bogus statement in of itself for a number reasons. DOA was already a great fighting game series with a foundation of its own). They will say this despite the sexuality being highly present to wildly varying degrees in other fighting games they play. Insult to injury, the TN staff themselves outright state that the sexuality is not completely gone.
3). Folks who will obsessively play the game and present material exclusively for the sexual aspect of it.

There may be a few more bases and sides than just those I speak about above. Each group has the potential to act a little too obnoxious or overaggressive over the subject which eventually leads to exaggeration, overgeneralizations, and more potential misinformation. You will see these things on forums, social media, and in videos.

It may just be wise to see what else happens in the near future. Speculating and theory-fighting in our heads and then speaking about it on a strategic and on a more positive basis.

Hopefully, TN will also take into account player reception and thoughts regarding game play. A lot of good things happened in the announcement and showcasing of DOA6 too...

This thread became: "The People vs otnesse"

otnesse, whether intentional or not, does not carry discussions well. He frequently makes strawmen arguments that he believes give credibility to his points, but in reality are mere tangents that only serve to confuse and provoke other members into a never-ending cycle of trying to reason with the unreasonable. While it's fine to have debates and disagreements, the actual points relevant to the discussion are quite simple and have been made over and over again, with nothing both novel and relevant having been posted in a many pages.

I didn't just review a never-ending torrent of off-topic torture to have it begin anew. Nearly 200 posts were deleted, and the thread is being temporarily locked. It will be re-opened when new, relevant information on the topic presents itself. At that time, there will be some guidelines:

1) If a point has already been stated, it should not be repeated.
2) Anything posted containing off-topic discussion will be deleted.
3) @otnesse is banned from further posting in this thread.

Now that DOA6 is taking a flight and is almost here there are few things that i have to rant about on DOA5 and The Fan base. Are the fans really like this? I mean come on, you care about fan service that much that adds nothing to the gameplay? But i guess history is repeating it's self yet again like with DOA 5. And it's still pisses me off to this day about the garbage fire dlc practice that was in DOA 5. Because let's be honest the crap was terrible and we all know it, instead of adding new stages and original characters ( Not clones and copy and paste) Team ninja took the role of the blitzkrieg and bombed us with shitty dlc. I don't know about you but bikinis are boring and plain ( my opinion) and would rather have something creative like this...

And for the love of god give the females some muscles ( I'll be honest this is my fetish) for crying out loud.

Thanks so much for picking my entry out of all the possible (and other artist's AMAZING) designs.
I figured everyone would have forgotten about these by now.

Being honest, if my design made it into the game... I would loose my mind! The fact it was the winning entry for Tina during the first contest, and that was even tweeted out by TN, but they put the Red/Black Cowboy costume in the game instead (a good design, but easier to build) broke my heart. Would have given ANYTHING to see it in the game!

Those fans you are addressing luckily don't make up the majority of the fans here on FSD xD and I agree with you, when DOA5LR came out, I had high hopes for stage DLC and more content besides costumes due to an interview article I had on the game so I was disappointed. I like the fanservice and love a good sexy bikini showing almost everything and such but nicely designed costumes imo are much better

And tbh I wouldn't mind if the more physical girls like Tina and Rachel had some muscle like abs and such, although please leave Kasumi be since I prefer her the way she is xD
