Side stepping in doa3.1 has changed for the best, and has been made more to the level of other 3d fighters.

Free step evasion

Free step in doa3.1 is slightly improved, or should I say, they loosened up the tracking. Now you can get a lil more out of free stepping this time around. It is now much easier to cause your opponent to go off kilter and cause them to fight the air.

Side stepping and side step attacks

Once you go into a SS, all linear attacks are useless against it, half circular attacks are evaded by stepping to the opposite direction of the attack, and full circular attacks are rarely step-able.Hayate's cart wheel is one of those maneuvers that defy this rule. Some SS attacks are deadly and cannot be beat with any attack. Gen Fu's SS attack for example, have high priority and can only be avoided, hit with an attack of the same priority, or counter held.


Other Evasive moves-

Brad Wong's sway step movement (forgot the name) is more evasive.
Moves that supposed to be evasive like Bayman's roll,Helena's bukuho,etc. are even more evasive in general. what this means, you can now use more evasive measures to you avoid your opponents assault and then mount your own offensive tactics.

Free Stepping Vs. Wake up kicks-

Generally, Free Stepping cannot evade wake up attacks(there are exceptions to the rule). It has been noted that once your opponent is hit with a side stepping attack, if they opt to techroll, you can Free step around them, and hit their back. many has said that there was no way around this, but their actually is. If you end up getting predictable with the direction you free step, your opponent can Techroll in the same direction and than do the rising attack to hit you, Once this has been established, your opponent will be able to throw in just Techrolling to throw you off and mess up your game.

Free step evasion Frame data

I know that some of you would like to know how many frames free stepping is comprised of. I have found that free stepping has a 0 frame execution, 0 frame hit detection, and 11frame recovery = 0/0/11. So lets say you want to know the exact amount of frame advantage you have after FS an attack. You would first find the duration of an attack and subtract it from the recovery of FS to see your exact advantage. EX:

:p = 9/2/13
9 = Execution
2= Hit detection
13= Recovery
Total = 24 frame duration. 24 - 11 = 13 frame advantage.

* the same can be applied to those characters that have SS and or evasive movements

When Ever you find yourself back dashing, and you want to fsd, you should know that all the characters are not equal in this department. Some characters are just great with Back dashing, FSD, or just both. Here is a Tier listing from best to less good.

Convention:

Back dash = :4 :4~repeat
Korean Back Dash = :1:1~repeat or :1:4:1~repeat
Back dash walk = :4:4:4b

FSD(FREESTEP DODGING):

-Using the free stepping to dodge is a hard technique to master. Because of this, FSD(Free step dodging) is considered to be an advanced technique.

-unlike other sidestepping techniques, FSD only allow you to dodge the first attack in a string(the majority of the time). Because of this, you must have a pre-planned strategy with the dodge, to avoid getting hit by your opponents follow up.

-staying at least a foot or two a way from your opponent will give you enough space to dodge. being to close will null your ability to dodge.

-knowing whether your opponents attack is a left or right, will determine how you dodge. Left attacks, you dodge to his/her left right attacks, you dodge to his/her right
**NOTE**
there are some moves you can dodge from the opposite direction, and get a better dodge.

Here is a break down of the type of attacks you can dodge:

linear attacks:
These are straight forward attacks that stay in one axis within the 3d environment. ex. jab

These are the easiest to dodge, and has a higher rate

Half circular attacks:
These are attacks that arc, starting from left to right or right to left. these attacks are done within multi axis. ex. Tina's leg cut, or double submarine

these attacks are more difficult to dodge

Full circular attacks:
these are attacks that make a complete 360 degrees. these attacks are done on a multi axis.
ex. sweep

these moves are near impossible to dodge.

Out of these moves, jumping and lunging attacks are the most easiest out of the moves in the game to dodge. These moves are almost guaranteed to get back turned advantages, which can lead in to juggles and environmental play, also giving you counter hit bonusesFSD is very effective during the right conditions.
here are some tips:

-Don't use FSD like a Side Step in tk4 or Vf4(its more similar to SC1 & 2).
-you must feel the dodge, and not just carelessly do it
-Know exactly which moves you can dodge
-Always have a follow up in mind.
Getting a successful dodge is useless against strings or combo's with out the follow up attack. either its a reversal(a dodge and a reversal increases the chance of getting a high counter hold) or an attack(will become a counter attack, and will cause attacks to have launching properties).


-Just like any Technique, use it wisely, Doa3 strength is punishing repetitiveness (repeating a move, combo, throw, reversal) and predictability.

-Just like reversals, you can easily be thrown from a dodge.


-Stepping- Stepping is a simple step moving into the background or into the foreground. When evading, stepping will position you directly on the side of your opponent.

*NOTE*
- Stepping may not evade all attacks that are evadable
- Stepping is a subcategory of Free stepping

- Step blocking- The Same as above, but instead of just simply taking a step, you take a diagonal step toward the background or the foreground while blocking simultaneously.

-Free stepping - The main purpose of the title Free stepping is moving(fast walking) into the foreground or background(but Free stepping, is actually the free movement into an 8 way direction). Free stepping is a offspring of the 8way run from Sc, Its not as fast as Sc, but faster than Vf4's and Tk4's 8way movement. When evading, Free stepping will position you behind your opponent.


- Free step blocking- Unique to the Doa franchise, It enables you to evade or just simply free step and block simultaneously.

*NOTE*
- Unlike other fighters, the free step and step block allow you to do more advanced things like evade and block at the same time, while buffering in other movements and attacks. I.e Evade block- Counter attack, Evade block-Evade-Throw escape (non command
throws), etc.etc.
