You have the option in your controller config to set your Side Step command to either

By default it is set to
To do the attacks from side step you should just be able to treat it like you would a normal string:
Don't delay the or button after doing the side step command.
Note, that Marie Rose has one of the moves that Free Step while being performed, and for her that's but shouldn't be confused with the Side Step system.
