Why is DOA such a stereotyped game?

Where I am, nobody really stereotypes Dead or Alive, unless they only know the volleyball game. There's too many busa mains though. "IM GONNA KICK UR BUTT WITH MASK GUY LOL"

There's a phase in my area where teenagers/young adults are dying their hair grey/white, so Christie's a little more popular lol ,and Honoka cause of her pink hair n somethin else i have no idea ;)

I just think all old-fogie videogame reviewers think all videogames are 'destroying the brains of the youth' like that RT news article i shared a while ago. I have no idea why these old folks are trying to get people to hate video games when nobody's buying that at all.

my gran used to be really uncomfortable when i played doa but then i got her to play it with me and she loved it lol. she actually won against me without me pretending because grandad walked in front of the tv oblivious lol.

Don't get me wrong, sexy stuff turns me on like anywhere else, but i think, that TN sells it too much, not that they do it that much, but they try to sell as their main thing. But i do think that some stuff should be toned down

Level or not, a bikini is a bikini, there's no sugarcoating stuff like that. What's more is that Cammy originally had nipple bumps in her default, and her ass is completely out in it as well. R Mikas outfit is sexualized extremely and she originally slapped her ass in plain view in her ultra move complete with jiggle, and the female alternate outfit DLCs and costumes are also very revealing, almost if not on par to what DOA has

In general it doesn't matter how revealing a swimsuit is, a swimsuit is still a swimsuit

And X3 isn't pure fanservice, there's stuff to do besides look at the girls, and the girls aren't submissive, they actually get mad and tell you to stop if you put them in overly perverted poses which should deter players from doing so anyway. DOA is just more open about the fanservice and the dlc is optional, and most of the defaults aren't any worse than what Street Fighter does with their girls

And those Lisa and Helena bikinis aren't even that bad, I've seen far more revealing

There is, but i wanted to put specific examples of DOA5LR, i know there is worse stuff in the game though, just had a fast google search.

And the other stuff is, those aren't swimsuits, most of DOA's "swimsuits" (most doax3), i think it falls in the lingerie domain more than a swimsuit one.

But you're right, other games do fanservice, some might say it is better or worse, but i would say that TN is the only that try to sell its games based on fanservice (i mean, in the fighting game area). Which is to me, bad marketing, because DOA has WAY MORE than that to offer.

DOA is a Japanese based game tho, they were going to time everything down but long time fans cried foul so they opted to make a sexy game with good gameplay I see no reason why a game should limit how sexy and attractive and revealing a character is, I like to play a game where I know the gameplay is good and the characters I use are hot too

My problem with that is when they break out of character to do that.

Point A: Pole dancing.

I can see Tina doing that, i can see Christie doing that, Hitomi, or Lisa even...

But tell me, would Kasumi even know how to pole dance? she was raised in a japanese hidden ninja village, she has that culture on her, and she only got like, 2 years on the outside world, she never shown to have any kind of affection towards parties or dancing. That is my problem with that kind of fanservice, is not much by the fanservice in itself, but how it is presented.

And i think that is the big point of difference between DOA and other fighting game franchises.

Take Street Fighter.

R.Mika is a wrestler, wrestlers go over the top with their outfits, sexyness (female wrestlers), and body musculature.
Laura is brazilian, and that kind of way to wear is kind of common if you go to some beaches around here (i live far from those areas, but i've been there, i can confirm).
Chun Li had shown from time to time to be into partying, not only that, but doing a lot of disguised work using revealing clothes.

I think the "hate" towards DOA fanservice comes from that, i feel a bit that way to be honest.

You know this super serious ninja girl that suffered discrimination, and has murdered countless numbers of highly trained soldires of doatec? Sure, all she would do to someone peeking at her butt would say: "nah, don't look at me" doing a high pitched scream like some schoolgirl?

Fanservice is fine, and is good, i like sexy girls, but some consistency on character is great, and can make fanservice even better.

Putting my cents, you can't compare games like Tekken or SF since those happen to "just be there" for sexual appeal but not a huge factor on what made those game popular. SF and Tekken have a bikini yeah but it wasn't a huge contribution on what made those games do well.

I think DOA is a fantastic game, however just because SF or Tekken has a pack or customization for a bikini doesn't mean it's what made those games score a big hit. That isn't a good reason since it's just looking at a phase to play victim or something. I truly believe DOA deserves way more credit, but there are reasons why those games make it far. They have a huge crowd who focus on the overall content of the game than just portions of cosmetics etc.

In general if DOA isn't widely accepted then let it be so. Whether a game is widely accepted or not has never driven me wanting to play to it, I liked DOA even before I knew it had revealing swimsuits and stuff in the game when I tried the Dimensions version when I was 14, the boob physics i didn't really mind since Tekken 5 had ass and boob physics so that kind of set the bar where my tolerance level was at

In general if DOA isn't widely accepted then let it be so. Whether a game is widely accepted or not has never driven me wanting to play to it

However people want the game to be accepted. Showing the same thing over and over again is just looping the situation in playing a song on repeat. People here expect DOA to top millions over Street Fighter when you have TN making side games like DOAX3 that can actually do more harm than good. Course people would defend it simply because they are not interested in a fighting game. Are they wrong for this? probably not, they like the game so their tastes overcomes everything else because it's what they like and what pleases them only.

Tekken 5 had ass and boob physics so that kind of set the bar where my tolerance level was at

But again, those physics are not what made Tekken popular. I still do not see how people decide to create this situation on playing victim to something that Tekken doesn't truly focus on. If Street Fighter was like DOA where it strictly focused on that content and Street Fighter somehow gets more praise from people than DOA, then I might of agreed with you.

When you look at game articles for Street Fighter or Tekken, you will barely see spot on mentions about it's sex appeal. Instead majority or it will either talk about the graphics, story, or gameplay comparisons from the ones before it. When you read DOA articles just about almost all of them mentions the game's sexual appeal (usually wrong descriptions of it) first before anything else (sometimes unimportant description like mentioning Helena showing the small crack of her booty, like really? that's important for an article? lolol), as well having those word descriptions giving people the wrong idea that makes it seem like it's a porn game, little do they know that DOA is actually a promising fun game but such description causes people to look past it without even checking out the gameplay at the very least. Just typing DOA in google will have the first few pages on Zack Island with a bikini or a thumbnail of a youtuber who makes those Ryona videos, yet hardly explains DOA for it's beautiful environment and immersive action.

I think sex appeal and details is very important in a fighter because who in the world wants to play crazy looking odd shit lol, but it's the portrayal of the game where they managed to create this impenetrable barrier with so many ways to fool someone into thinking it's worse than what they had in mind.

This. This this this thiiiis! I really doubt Kokoro would pole dance either she's too innocent fo dat T_T that's probably why hibari isn't too (i mentioned 'too', i know she is popular but i've never seen her on a top 10 m9) popular in senran kagura it's just kinda disturbing because she's so innocent

They have a huge crowd who focus on the overall content of the game than just portions of cosmetics etc.

this too!! you guys literally both wrote something similar to what i was going to write lol!!

The only swimsuits I've seen that are skimpier than the helena and lisa ones are the c-string that jimmy kimmel advertised but that's it.

That's why I wish the next DOAX would have the entire cast, and it would be more like a party game than a... Xtreme 3. Owner San could have more of a personality, and be customised, too. Like a really shitty self-insert OC.
Of course, classic minigames would return.

Oh I'm not trying to pull the playing victim thing, I'm just mentioning it is all. Tekken had those in the game but because it was subtle and you wouldn't have noticed and they didn't really say anything about it it was kind of overlooked

frankly, i would say DOA is a great game in the hands of the wrong ppl. and as far as the sexuality concept goes in any FG? well, having some bikinis and stuff is alright cause who doesn't wants to see their favourite character in that sometimes ? but the one thing DOA does wrong is take this thing over the limit which harms this game's overall image but this aspect of the game is in the hands of the developers and judging by flooding of necessary costumes , their mindset seems kinda fucked up about this series's future. i hope im wrong in this case.

and as far the players are concerned ? SF and Tekken clowns got nothing on DOA's mechanic cause their mind is only limited to "Oh , string manipulation?! SUPER YOMi!!" . and the only way i know to get respect out of clowns in a FG ? beat the shit outta them . that's the only way we players can contribute cause we need to show to the other "REAL FG PLAYERS" that we can bend them over in their own game if we want to. cause it's all about downloading in any high lvl FG and nobody does it better than we do.

and media is such a powerful tool in today's age, the image of the game of how it looks in trailers, game presentations etc is always gonna be in the hands of the developers and us players can only state our opinions cause at the end of the day DEVELOPERS ARE STILL BUSINESSMEN AT HEART. the sooner the folks realize this better .

and as far as player nonsense is concerned? bend them over in their own shit.

This. good fanservice plays to the girls' strengths. DOA5
does not do good fanservice, it does GENERIC fanservice that is usually wildly out of character for the girls and comes across more as stupid than sexy.

The problem is the hypocrisy. Before DOA5's DLC spam of fetish outfits, DOA already had the rep of "sexy fighter" despite being considerably TAMER than other fighting games, so it was an unfair reputation.

post doa5 dlc, it completely deserves it with the never ending storm of bikini dlc, though, which sickens me.

disclaimer: i did not read through the 5 pages.

to answer the question outright: DoA innovated sexy fighting games. when it first released, it had breast physics. those triangle titties were bouncing, the first stage was a beach, they were in bikinis. in DoA1. in 1996.

latest

DoA is known for what it started out as. It was the first and only. SF didn't really add bikinis til SF4 i don't think? correct me if im wrong but it wasn't until they started using 3D models that the fanservice started and THAT was less than 10 years ago and tekken didn't start getting saucy til..................5? whenever customizing got super big.

i think after DoA, virtua fighter was next to feature sexy content but im not really verse in the virtua fighter games cause i..honestly don't like them. sorry if i repeated what was already said, i shouldn't be so lazy.

Tekken has always been sexualized starting from Tekken 2, Jun had that safari outfit and nina had the short purple cocktail dress and pretty much all the girls revealed some skin in their own in character ways in all the games, but they definetly upped the ante with girls like anna...compare her TTT dress with her T5 one where they gave her embroidered fishnets and mandarin dress cleavage front and center, although tbf her secondary outfit was classy. Tekken knows how to keep the girls classy although Tekken has shown they've thrown that out the window as each girl has at least one costume thats pretty revealing but in their defence the main focus is the men in Tekken and all of them are muscle bound and cut like fresh carrot sticks and tend to be either shirtless or damn near shirtless so it's pretty even for both the guys and girls

Completely aware of that, however the progression of the series up to DOA3 reduced that particular content and sold moderately decent even for lack of content. With the recent replies (should of read them), some are comparing the games such as Street Fighter on sex appeal content, but the fact of the matter is that Street Fighter never used sexy content as a way of contribution to why their games are more praised and played. Same as with Tekken. These types of games can apply sexual appeal with minimum effort due to the fact that those series itself have a mass consumer base who play those games for the full content, put on a bikini in Tekken and it will have 0% effect on sales reduction (unless they decide to change marketing strategy etc.) These days, if you ask a Street Fighter player to try DOA their response would be more towards "why should I play that when I can watch porn?" even though DOA isn't exactly as he would describe it. However barriers have opened up to that ignorance, but some of that ignorance wouldn't be a thing if TN showcased the game a little differently to where the SF player can still appreciate DOA for what it is.

For your second reply regarding the VF series and DOA, DOA started the sexy fighter trend but other fighters did not follow suit of that from DOA. Other games add the addition of sexy content regardless if the demand for it is positive for the least. Just like SF or Tekken, even if VF did sexy content for contribution, very doubtful they followed DOA for that. The series is way too hard to be played to even get people to enjoy the cosmetic portions of casual things.

Tekken has always been sexualized starting from Tekken 2, Jun had that safari outfit and nina had the short purple cocktail dress and pretty much all the girls revealed some skin in their own in character ways in all the games, but they definetly upped the ante with girls like anna...

They probably did. Still wasn't a source on why the series is popular.

I'll bet you money that if Namco does the exact same strategy as Team NINJA their Tekken series would flop because you can't compete to DOA who flourish out of that these days. Simply because DOA can do it better.

Throwing my 2 cents in here...

I played DOA and most of the games in it's series like everyone else, the only games that really had sexualized outfits in the dozens past DOA5(and DLC wise, might I add) is DOA2U, probably the PS1 version of DOA and that's honestly it.
DOA4 basically has more casual outfits than any other game in the series, the original DOA2 was pretty much the same and even DOA5 at the start was pretty tame with the selection itself.

Honestly, it's a weird conundrum when you can say that while yeah, DOA is stereotyped because it markets on it's sexual appeal, that not only suddenly disqualifies it from being taken seriously but that also every other game is suddenly "not as bad", which is still absurd because in truth, DOA is only as bad as the creators and team choose it to be(in the same way SFV wants to have it's cake and eat it too despite going straight into the DOA route with not only the costume selection but the sheer amount of sexual costumes the females have).
And secondly, that last part is a pretty bad example since counting America, only NRS games can even touch Capcom fans and their fanbases meanwhile Japan is simply more loyal to what they like, damn what anyone else wants to say.

They probably did. Still wasn't a source on why the series is popular.

Funny enough, you can say the exact same thing about Soul Calibur...and that game was actually successful because even though it was a great game on it's own...there's zero denial about the fact that it's female characters was more sexualized than DOA's by far(you literally have to bring in DOA5's DLC content or DOAX to even HAVE an argument of whose more sexualized between Kasumi and Ivy or Taki.)

And Soul Calibur V, which regressed the seuxalization down, pretty much killed the franchise and while you can say Lost Swords did no favors, it went even WORSE in that direction than DOA could(seriously, the outfits in that game make no sense even compared to DOA's)

I played DOA and most of the games in it's series like everyone else

So did I. I played DOA long before this site even existed and met some of the older members awhile back before this. I played DOA on the older forums of DOACentral. I played DOA2 (Dreamcast) as well as DOA1 on a emulator to see what the fuss was about from the first one. Fun short game, might of been extremely exhilarating if it was back in the day. Only one I have never played till this day and age is Dimensions since there is no stable emulator (Citra just came out and still in it's early stages) and I don't own portables. I actually went to events to show support for the game with most of the other members who more or less post in the competitive FB group now. Not discrediting you for playing the game.

DOA is stereotyped because it markets on it's sexual appeal, that not only suddenly disqualifies it from being taken seriously but that also every other game is suddenly "not as bad", which is still absurd because in truth, DOA is only as bad as the creators and team choose it to be(in the same way SFV wants to have it's cake and eat it too despite going straight into the DOA route with not only the costume selection but the sheer amount of sexual costumes the females have).

Pretty sure that's the majority who don't take it serious for DOA. Other games do not take it as bad as this one. Do you want the sex appeal to stay in DOA right? yes? then leave it in there. They should however, promote more on the aspects of the game such as the gameplay heavily. The sex appeal is there. No one is trying to remove it. DOA fans will know it'll always be there so unclear as to why people develop insecurities from it.

SFV will survive despite it's harsh criticisms and the game is still being supported because it's the only game being supported by Capcom. But again, the sexual costumes isn't the goal for that game. Never was nor do I understand with why it's an issue for people to complain about the game that focuses on the overall content.

Soul Calibur's success was for the overall content and hardly was a major point on showing some skin, the game's content overshadowed that so not sure why this one is a topic. The customization was just there just like Tekken and was not a major focus to the raw game. It wasn't even allowed in tournaments.

Look up Soul Calibur's V (and 4) feedback, sales, and community, and not once does it mention about oversexualization killing the franchise. The game died because it's no longer being supported nor getting updates, not because of sexualized topics. The series has become the dreamland to your daily Pachinko slot machines of gambling. Same as Virtua Fighter, the series also died due to lack of support from Sega focusing on other things and having a change in their department with the division team (Yu Suzuki is not even a director anymore). And just for the sake of time, I looked up all of this before writing this post so feel free to look it all up as well to let you know that I wasn't joking on this.

You are welcomed.
