Those were all the past couple of years, but I get what you mean, though because 2002 was right after Virtua Fighter 4, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, and other quality fighters and a little before the oddly brief drought we experienced before the new age, as it were.

I don't think it would have made a whole lot of difference on the game's overall structure. HD... woo-hoo. The fact that it's a Wii exclusive is part of its appeal; you really can't fault a game for not being on the other consoles.

1-Up and IGN barely skimmed over the fact that Final Showdown even existed (though to its credit, 1-Up had a fantastic cover story on VF5 vanilla). And with IGN wetting themselves over DOA5 with all their features coverage, it's not surprising to see its sister site trying to go the other route...

It is a very good game. Not sure I can say it (or anything, really) tops Metroid, and I really don't know what you're on about with the graphics. It looks at least as good as Monster Hunter Tri.

A decent résumé doesn't make a weak performance any less forgettable.

I dunno. It felt more like number quoting than something entirely derived from emotional attachment, which is, admittedly, both good and bad.

I'm more on the side of music or new stages over costumes, unless they're really cool or throwback type things.

Seems kind of odd, being the same game and all. I did notice some under-developed textures and similarly little things in the story vids that have been posted around, but nothing distinguishing between the two versions as you're suggesting.

Man, the netcode really can be a make-or-break factor for a lot of people. I'm damn well glad that I've gotten enough friends into it to foster healthy, regular competition, even if none of them have any aspiration to exceed being good enough to take each other on.
