Edit: If its your first time looking here I wouldn't suggest using this method as it is outdated now and there are a lot better ways (tools) to use to mod the game now.
Tools Required:
1. Umod
https://code.google.com/p/texmod/wiki/uMod
2. Photoshop (You can also use gimp to modify the texture but I like photshop)
3. Gimp
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
4. Gimp DDS Plugin (Goes to: C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins)
https://code.google.com/p/gimp-dds/
4. PSD/DDS Converter
http://www.easy2convert.com/psd2dds/

Step 1: Run uMod
Check Global Hook
Select Add Game and Navigate to your DOA directory and select game.exe
Example(E:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Dead or Alive 5 Last Round)

Step 2: Launch DOA through steam as normal
If the injection worked you will be greeted with another tab in umod

Step 3:
Set the directory of where you want the textures to be saved
Check "Save all textures"
Press Update

Step 4:
Go to training mode
Select the character you want
Choose Dojo as stage because it has the least amount of assets (easier to find your texture)
Your folder should start populating with files like this: (you have to wait for the textures to fetch so don't exit out of the game right away)

Step 5:
This won't work unless you installed the DDS plugin for GIMP (Go back to top)
Open GIMP and start searching through the DDS files until you find the texture you want to edit

Step 5:
Export the file as PSD
Open the PSD in Photoshop
CREATE A NEW LAYER OF THE MAIN_SURFACE AND EDIT ONLY THE NEW LAYER YOU CREATED

Step 6:
Save it and use the PSD/DDS converter to turn it back into a DDS file

Step 7:
Go back to uMod
Start DOA through Steam
Drag the modified DDS onto the white space
Right click in the white space and select "Update(reload)"
Done!
Artistic Skills Too Strong

If your artistic skills are crappy like mine you can use all the settings under image->adjustment to change color without losing the fine texture details.
You can add images/text on to the texture as well

Here is all of Honoka's texture I found minus her special critical burst textures

If you suck like me you can use hue/saturation under image in photshop to change color without losing the fine texture details.

I have some painting/photoshop experience but I never got down to the metal in gimp like I once did in photoshop.

Hmmm, using Photoshop right now and I can't open some of the .dds files after despite having the plugin installed.

Have to use GIMP to export it as a PDS and then open the PDS file with Photoshop and convert the PDS file back to DDS

Got it fixed, and thanks. Here's my first attempt of altering the textures with Photoshop CS3* (should be fine with other CS versions)

*NOTE that if you're using Photoshop, you can skip the .psd conversion process and save it directly as a .dds file (save it with the default settings)

Here's the link to the .dds plugin so that Photoshop can read the files on it

Insert the file at * Drive \ Adobe \ Adobe Photoshop CS# \ Plug-ins \ File Formats

I know its a LITTLE off topic, and Im not sure if you can find this out just yet, but can anyone tell me (out of curiosity) what the average tri/face/polygon count of the DOA models is?

Just a ball part figure.

OH man I haven't been this excited for DOA in a long while. Nice job on the guide and stuff

@Blash I don't remember the exact number but it's a lot higher than most PS3 gen games. Something like 80k maybe (for the more detailed costumes)
