In DOA you can block standing in several ways: H, 4, 7.
7 is special because you can block and create space at the same time. This can be used as a defensive maneuver to make the opponent whiff attacks or at least minimize incoming damage.

DOA6 slowed down free step movement speed for all diagonal directions dramatically:

But the speed of the "initial big step animation" that plays during the first 21 frames remains unchanged. This can be exploited by holding 7 and briefly tapping H every 21 frames (no need to be THAT precise). One major downside is that its efficiency is strongly character-dependent. Rig followed by Jann Lee seem to have the fastest 7 movement in the game, Mila is very slow, Brad Wong has the absolute worst.
This kind of tech is possible in every DOA that has the free step system. Here it is in action:

And here's a quick showcase of its potential uses:

If your character is equipped with good 7 movement speed and a good attack that can be done while holding 7, it can become an excellent whiff punishment tool, since you can just tap one button to execute it. Noteworthy examples: Hayabusa 7K, Jann Lee P+K, Rig P+KK, Zack 7K, Bayman S, Tina H+K

"...why not just backdash?"
Because it's overly risky at close range, since in DOA getting striked during a backdash gets you CH (DOA5/DOA6) or even HCH (DOA2U/DOA3).
