previously, kasumi and ayane took down raidou and Genra on their own. was retconned that they had help. then character personalities were overhauled. zZack used to be an eccentric but badass DJ who always came as runner up in tournaments, now he's a total assclown. lei fang used to be an arrogant master insulted that Jann saved her, now she's a fawning schoolgirl. Hitomi used to be the tomboy of the series (like Mila is now), now she's lei fangs bubbly sidekick. CChristie used to be classy, now she's slutty. Brad used to be on some spiritual quest and meditated and gave up drinking, now he's just a dirty old drunk man. sso on and so forth.

Pretty much this in it's own way.
I believe Zack still has his runner up characteristic since DOAD didn't really focus on the other characters as much as the ninjas(except Helena when it came to DOA4), same with Lei-Fang's inital anger at Jann(but yeah, either she cooled down BECAUSE of Hitomi or she got radically changed when Jann humbled her one too many). I think Hitomi is still tomboyish, but bubbly and cucco got her worse. Christie was ALWAYS some level of slut, but she still has some level of class. But yeah, Brad suffered the worst, I'm not even sure what his characterization is supposed to be with him around Eliot at this point...

I would argue that pretty much everyone remained unchanged from DOA4. Zack clearly was comic relief, getting blown up off the side of a building, not to mention the skeletons. Brad clearly didn't give up drinking. Hitomi was very clearly derp. Christie was very clearly flirtatious (not to mention a stripper).

Did people have all of these characterization complaints back then? Because not a lot has changed. Zack could've gone without the disco clown outfit, yeah. And Leifang probably just needed something after she actual beat Jann Lee.

Zack being blown off the side of a tower WHILE SCALING IT BAREHANDED, WHICH IS BADASS, plus rescuing Helena from a burning building, also badass, is nowhere near the level of complete goofball that is 5 Zack. he just loses to everyone, serves as Helenas jester (literally), and there's nothing cool about him anymore. I will admit however, that most of the DOA4 endings were retarded and out of character. kkind of an omen for what 5 would bring. as for Brad, he did a seasons long meditation and hurled his flask from a mountain top, signifying that he would stop drinking. you don't have to be actually drunk for his style. then 4 gave him acid trips instead... Hitomi was at worst naive in 3 and 4, not counting the trex incident. I most definitely had complaints about the 4 arcade endings. ssome were good, like Helena, Bayman, Ryu, Tina, etc. others were either totally out of character (brad), or just stupid (kasumi, Hayate, Hitomi, lei fang, etc).

Zack still strikes me as a beast.... just one that doesn't care too much and is instead focused on serving Lady Helena and getting paid good money for it.

Well, seriously though, it's not like he's all that combat-in-story-wise. He was 2nd placed in DOA and won 3 and 4 by default and because Helena forfeited the title for him.
I mean, at the end of the day, story-wise, he's not any more special than the others... I don't think he's weaker either though. But he's happy, working for Helena, having an island, making craploads of money :3

On another note, Kasumi only got better. Literally the same, just more mature. Which kind of aligns with them being older.

I've always been a fan from the first DOA, but age just made her perfect.

The same graceful, beautiful, kind and caring woman who on the other hand is extremely intelligent and CAN destroy anyone in her way, even though all she truly wishes for is a peaceful life.
But now no longer so emotional and hasty, but no longer hesitant either, no longer naive and not looking to avoid every single fight with third parties, and instead taking head on whoever stands in her way with extreme determination. She does not wish to fight, but she will not run away either. And that is quite noticeable in the difference between fight intros from previous installments.
