I mean sometimes it is, but I find it very strange, especially when people it’s a close friend. If you have a close bond with someone and you don’t talk to them for several months, but do post on forums, it kinda irks me.

Well, generally I put a lot more effort into direct communication than I do forum shitposting. I wouldn't say depression is ever the cause, but if I'm very busy and don't have time to write up something proper, I may put off writing to a friend until I feel I can say something adequately becoming of our relationship, and then shitpost publicly in the meantime.
