Well, the new latest iteration for Tekken is actually that arcade one in Japan, IIRC. And while it it doesn't look pretty, it doesn't succeed in being quite as ugly as SCV in my personal opinion. I actually think VF5 looks better than SCV. At least people look like people and there aren't a thousand needless lightning effects obscuring the screen at any given time (and no bloom of doom!).
Regarding 2D fighters, I definitely think Skullgirls and Blazblue look better than SCV. I'm not a fan of the "anime fighter" aesthetic, but SCV somehow manages to manifest everything I hate about the genre visually and then add on some extra ugly to tip it over.
It's funny. After I wrote the status, I was about to put "except for the bloom", but I decided to let it rock. lol
I think that the texturing on the models and stages works really well. Maybe the customized parts look like thick sheets of cardboard, but the actual things they put work into look fine.
There are things that I don't like about the art style of the game, but I had come back to it after, I guess, maybe a year, and I was legitimately surprised. And no, VF5 does not look better. What are you talking about?
The graphics are outdated in VF, but stylistically it's fine, if a bit uninspired (except animations, but that's another issue). SCV intentionally made a slew of terrible, ugly decisions that had nothing to do with the time it was released or the budget the developers had to work with.
Skullgirls & Blazblue look "cute" thanks to the artsyle, but I wouldn't exactly consider them impressive-looking visually or graphically. VF5FS looks outdated as all hell and has one of the most uninspired visual styles out of the 3D fighters & 2D fighters. The game is about as bland as a game can be visually. SCV looks miles better than it. I agree that the bloom was overdone on the game though.
I never understand where you're coming from when you say that SCV is hideous Brute lol I understand not liking it but it's definitely not terrible. I think SCV is gorgeous.
I guess with my experience in frame-by-frame animation I have a certain appreciation for Skullgirls' visuals, even if I'm not partial to them myself. VF looking "outdated" was already addressed.
As for SCV, to each their own. I personally don't find that it does anything well, however, ranging from character designs to particle effects, interface, lighting or texture design. A shame, really, because the early Soul games were excellent visually.
Skullgirl's artsyle is very cute looking and unique, but it's not really that impressive-looking and seems kinda "meh". It did do well in the animation department though. Went back and booted up SCV and it still looks quite amazing for a 4-year-old game (looks better than DOA5U in some areas), though I really hope a 1080p SC game gets made.
I found the game visually hideous, myself. The bloom is absolutely garish, cloth looks like thick sheets of cardboard and hair looks like tin foil.
