I wonder how the Souls games will adapt? They've been "dominating" the hack n' slash RPG genre since the beginning of the decade. Nioh just seems incredibly solid so far.

NiOH is just Team Ninja proving again that if they have a direction, they can make great gameplay. Yasuda showed that a bit on NG3RE, though not much due to being a re-release, and Ninja Gaiden Black being other game that shows TN's potential in the action genre. NiOH is just something amazing in itself, being based on souls, but going way further and deeper with its combat
