We went from Mario Logic where Mushrooms make you taller and Flowers give you Pyromancy - To Modern Logic like in Tomb Raider.... Power Ups and Ammo come in the form of Tools, Weapons and Bullets lying around in the Environment instead of Hovering in mid air like a Big Blue Glowing Icons.
It's simply the advancement of technology allowing developers to produce more realistic-looking experiences. Mario games still make no sense though lol.
