Here's the thing to remember: my bf's dad admitted the civil war was fought over owning black people then says the flag that represents the pro-slavery side isn't racist

Well....I don't know much about the Civil War but did the confederates have slaves of other ethnicities ?

Because if they did then he's got a point..... If not then yeah... its Racist.

Slaves were all black in america. And he wouldn't have a point otherwise because he'd still be on the side of people who owned people against their will.

Actually you are wrong. The majority of slaves were black but there were Chinese and Irish slaves as well, in fact the Irish slaves were more expendable because they were considered less valuable than the black slaves because they weren't as strong.

Also the war was started not necessarily because of ethics and morals but rather the north hated the fact that the south had an unfair competitive advantage in free labor due to slavery. There was a lot of nuance and detail that the history books leave out in regards to slavery.

I'm aware the English enslaved the Irish but this is the first I'm hearing of Irish slaves in America. But looking it up you're right

Tho the having rights and no lifelong slavery parts separate them from black slaves imo

I think there might've been Native American slaves, too? Or am I thinking of when the Spanish were going through South America?

@Marteze Oh I know he is he uses the n-word freely, calls every muslim a terrorist, and makes sure to pull out a really racist asian impression every single time we get Chinese food. It's extremely frustrating. He told me once his grandfather was a member of the KKK and I had to stop myself from saying "that explains a lot"
