All users of the Deathnote have the right to relinquish ownership, but at the cost lose their memories. They gain their memories back once they pick up the notebook again. Also note: Someone with the Shinigami Eyes will be able to see your lifespan, because you are not currently an owner of the Deathnote.

The confusing part is which Shinigami was Tethered to which Notebook... For whatever reason... Light wanted to shuffle around the ownership of the Death Notes and I got confused who owned what and why.
I do know this... to get his memories back he needed the very first Death Note he started with.
