You know what? This honestly gave me an epiphany...not just about the DOA fans, but fighting game fans in the West in general:
It feels like we are trying desperately to prove something.
Let's look past the DOA costume stuff for now and let's look at Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken and Soul Calibur.
Street Fighter V had people whining and complaining about something so erroneous that it could spell disaster for them. What was that? The glitch if a female is at the 2P side(let alone the increased jiggle before that). Or the fact that Rainbow Mika may be a playable character, or in GAMEfaqs case that Cammy needs to stop wearing her leotard...
It's the same thing with Tekken in how everyone is complaining about the increased focus on the females and their fanservicy costumes(Catalina, Lucky Chloe, Josie) and if left unchecked will kill off their game's rep.
It's also the same thing with Mortal Kombat and giving women realistic proportions(while yes there was plenty of fought against it, plenty more fought for it believing it would make their game legit).
And Soulcalibur Lost Swords in general...
I feel like every single time, the western community mainly tries so damn hard to be taken seriously...they forget they are playing games. Who honestly will give a fuck about any of these at all in a high stakes match? What, you scared that kid may snicker and demean you because he's acting like a child? That adult make act like an immature manchild who believes he's better than you because he plays the "superior" game?
I have seriously seen this for the last year with everyone tripping over backwards to not be the next DOA or the next fanservice game...and you don't even realize it makes you and them look completely foolish, let alone childish.
I have stated it before and again: You don't need to support the costumes one iota, but trying to pretend they don't exist or demean your game to please others is not going to win you favors ever. Stick by your game, you may not like what is happening but it's better than trying to play kissass to manchildren who pretend their game is better than another because of random nonsense.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be waiting on the next time people whine again like children because "Too much jiggle".
I really don't know how to explain this well, so I'll go through my whole DOA story thing. I first found out about DOA through the Xbox Magazine I was subscribed to in middle school, specifically DOA2U. What caught my eye was how interesting everything looked. I remember seeing Tina in her C4 fighting Bass, Kasumi fighting Jann Lee(?) in C13, Helena wearing her genie costume, and Ryu busting out a Izuna drop. That got me thinking so many things, like, "Holy shit, what the fuck is that guy even doing there, it kinda looks like primary lotus" and "Wait there are fighting genies in this game? Damn, I may have to try it out". While the costumes were somewhat sexualized, it was very apparent that DOA was a pretty kickass fighting game. Literally the next article after that was some game with every picture being of boobs/ass, etc. I laughed about it, showed it to my friends because I was in middle school and immature as fuck, then completely forgot about the game (don't even remember the name of it). I didn't get DOA2U because my mom saw "Dead" in the title and assumed it would be very violent...but that didn't stop her from getting me MK3 on my Super Nintendo when I was like 4, but that's a different story. I ended up getting DOA4, and other than the dominatrix Christie costume, which I chuckled at the first time I saw it, I was too busy getting stunned by Hayate/ all the ninjas online to really care what the costumes looked like. The arcade endings were pretty funny (loled at Lei Fang's and kinda teared up at Jann Lee's ending) and other than getting stomped on every other match, I had fun.
Now coming up to this "manchild" thing that keeps getting thrown around. Am I afraid of virtual girls' breasts jiggling? Well, considering its a video game and I've seen the real thing many times at this point in my life, I'm pretty sure that I'm not. Do seeing the girls in bikinis make lose my mind and make me want to rage quit? Nope, in fact, looking back on it, I thought the girls wearing bikinis was pretty cute, despite it being a video game. It wasn't a big deal because it wasn't real. Not only that, but in the Xbox Magazine, there were questions/comments answered by the writer of the article, and some of those comments made fun of some of the things the girls were wearing...which seemed pretty ridiculous, especially considering it looked like a guy was about to split open someone's head on the next page. So, I was aware DOA kinda had a reputation for bouncy girls. Honestly, its not the sexuality of DOA that frustrates me, its the emphasis on it. I mean, I kinda get it; DOA5 is pretty old now and most of the mechanics are still the same, so TN have to come up with something to make it relevant. But at the same time, at this point kinda reminds me of that game I saw in that Xbox Magazine long ago, and I realized that at the time I was thinking, "That's it? I'm suppose to buy this game because of boobs everywhere? Naw, I'll stick to begging my mom to get DOA so I could play as the genie chick". That's the same vibe I'm getting now. Of course DOA isn't all about breasts, but the fact that the sexuality has been the complete focus as of late really, really, frustrates me when they could still be advertising DOA as a solid fighter. And something I want to ask; do you think DOA5 is sexy? While it has been with DOA for a while now, with Kasumi wearing bunny costumes and shit since DOA1, I feel TN is trying too hard to make all the girls sexy. You say some of the members here are being childlike in ranting about some girls in video game showing a little jiggle; but I think its the opposite. Having girls wearing bikini after bikini isn't really sexy, at least to me. It's what I think guys hitting puberty would enjoy, honestly. Its like teenagers are programming this game rather than a development studio, and overall gives an immature feeling to the game. And the costumes in general are pretty bland; if they're going to keep making bathing suit DLC, make it more interesting. And making copy-paste costumes tick me off too; I hated that Lei Fang had like 20 of the same dresses in DOA4 and she still has that problem now. I don't think I would be so frustrated if the bikinis actually looked nice on the girls, and if the themed costume packs had theme wearing different costumes rather than the same ones in different colors. That goes for the Ninja ones too, I don't know why people liked those so much. It could be because it was the first time in a long time the guys got costumes...
As for everyone being serious about playing games...I agree that's true. But it's more like different franchises want to be better than other ones. I could go to a Tekken video, and mention any fighting game, fanboys would trash that fighting game.
"DOA is for horny kids who can't play real fighters!"
"Street Fighter is a Hadokenfest"
"MK is such a noob fighting game, who even plays that shit?"
And this goes for every franchise, be it FPS, fighters, whatever. The thing is, I'm pretty sure fans would care less if Lucky Chloe was in Tekken, but now they can't make fun of DOA for being that one fighter with the girls who look like they can't fight, so they want her out of the game. That's just one example, but anyways I think that making certain changes to games would mean they can't clown other franchises. Fans of a series like the feeling that the one game they chose is better than others; and then absolutely trash every other rival series to make themselves feel better. I'm pretty sure I did a shit job explaining that, but long story short, I agree that people should just enjoy playing their games without having to trash or be trashed by other game series.
@Me want Kasumi Yep, I was wrong about Ein and Leon. I remembered Emperor Cow making a petition for Leon's inclusion into the game, so that's why I thought that. As for the "good" DLC costumes, I'm not talking about "conservative" costumes, I mean "GOOD" costumes. Like, do you really think every bikini/swimsuit that the girls have look good on them? And the some of the other costumes that I would consider conservative are bad too, mostly the copy paste costumes. I'm mostly against the swimsuits because they're not creative most of the time. All I want is some good looking costumes I could buy; the guys and girls don't need to be in sweaters and sweats, or covered completely up, just look good. Like, I'm not saying every swimsuit should be deleted from the game, but more that most of them seem uninspired, and the fact that there are so many of the them makes it worse. Some examples I would consider to be good costumes would be Lei Fang's leather shorts and shirt, Hitomi's casual costume, Eliot's kilt, etc. And also, it kinda sucks that you consider criticism to being whining. There are some people that are raging and probably won't be happy with anything TN does, but for the most part I see people just wanting the game to be better and giving suggestions on how that can happen, whether it be on the technical side or the casual one.
Whelp, that was my huge D- essay on some of the things that was troubling me about DOA. As for the DLC, TN needs to give Helena her fucking Arabian costume back. I know now she's not a genie, and I don't even main her, but that would make my day if she got it back. I almost cried tears of joy when she got her opera dress back. That would be straight nostalgia for me.
