If anything, I think the initial sales help to validate their decision to openly communicate with, and receive input from, the community. The decision to tackle social media heavily also paid off. I remember when DoA5 was first announced, almost every FG site I visit, not directly dedicated to DoA (i.e. Eventhubs, iplaywinner, Shoryuken, etc.), was filled with negative reactions and biased bashing towards the game. Overtime I noticed the support continually grew more and more positive and people that previously downed the game began opening up to trying it or being completely won over entirely. I don't know how advertising went in other markets, but I've yet to see a single DoA5 commercial on TV here.
