Your Favorite Games of This Generation

Before even considering the purchase of a next-gen console, I intend to scavenge for the many great games of this generation that I missed as I came into the PS3/360 era rather late (bought a PS3 for DOA 5). That said, I've tried quite a few titles since then, and have been rather disappointed in some of the more popular releases (MGS4, Borderlands, God of War, Uncharted series, Assassin's Creed, etc). I wanted to ask FSD members what your personal favorite titles of this generation are with no regard to genre. A list of five to ten titles would be greatly appreciated, and a few sentences on why you enjoyed them would be even better. Thanks.

I've included my own favorite (in no particular order) for those interested:

-Batman Arkham City
I am a huge DC Comics fan, and this game was a dream come true for me.

-Tomb Raider
Personally, I found this to be much more enjoyable than the Uncharted games (no offense to those who enjoyed them). It just felt a lot less linear and the combat was a lot more fun.

-Dragon Age Origins

-TTT2, P4A, DOA5, BlazBlue, SkullGirls

-Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge

-Catherine

-Bayonetta, Vanquish, DmC

-Dishonored & Bioshock Infinite

Games that I am considering buying in the future are Fallout 3, Mass Effect trilogy, and Dark Souls. Any feedback on these titles would be awesome.

Batman AA/AC, Mini Ninjas, Mirror's Edge, Mass Effect trilogy, Rock Band 3, Journey, Tomb Radier, The Walking Dead, and Dead or Alive 5.

Probably will come back some other time to flesh those out.

As for your considerations. I can't legit talk about FallOut 3 because I worked on the DLC, you might enjoy it and if you do I recommend trying out Point Lookout and the Pitt - both are my favorite DLCs that I worked on.

You worked on Fallout DLC? Damn, you're a game designer? Thanks for your input!

I wasn't a game designer for FO3 DLC. I was merely a tester at the time.

Mass Effect - The first one was absolutely amazing, as one would expect from pre-2010 BioWare. The story was fantastic and set up for what should have been an amazing trilogy. EA had their hands in the sequels, unfortunately and they became crap. The first one is still a must play title though.

Dragon Age: Origins - BioWare's final gem before EA ruined them. So much character development in this game and a lot of lore to absorb. The combat system was pretty cool too and very reminiscent to that of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games. Stay away from the sequel.

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga - An overlooked gem of a RPG, developed by the largely unknown Larian Studios. Though I still haven't finished it yet myself, I'd easily say that it's one of the best games of this generation. Everyone who loves RPGs really needs to look into this title. Plus, if more people play it, we can get a Divinity III someday.

Gears of War - The original game's competitive multiplayer was a lot of fun back in late 2006 and throughout 2007. Sadly, the series got progressively worse over time with all the needless changes made to it and the fact that Epic Games refused to fix any of the problems the games had, while continuing to add new ones. I wouldn't recommend playing any title in the series at this point, but I give the first game an honorary mention for how great it was back in it's prime.

Borderlands and Borderlands 2 - I'm not one for shooters anymore, but these two shooter/RPG hybrids are great fun for co-op play with friends. There's a lot of humor in them as well.

Mortal Kombat 9 - This was the fighting game that made me want to start playing fighting games more competitively. Though my time with it was short lived, it was a lot of fun and I miss playing it. Hopefully Injustice: GAU will fill the gap.

I know there are others that I'm forgetting. I'll post more later if I remember any.

These are some of the games I enjoyed the most from this gen (excluding FGs):
Bayonetta
Dark Souls
Mirror's Edge
Mass Effect
Red Dead Redemption
Monster Hunter Tri (and now MH3 Ultimate, fuck year)
TLoZ Skyward Sword
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Tomb Raider Legend
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Resident Evil Revelaitons
Risen
Muramasa
Jeanne d'Arc (PSP)
Punch-Out
Project Zero 2 (the remake for the Wii)
Project Zero 4
Pandora's Tower

And probably many, many more.

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga - An overlooked gem of a RPG, developed by the largely unknown Larian Studios. Played Divinity II DKS on 360, and actually finished it. I still have to finish the expansion, though. Anyway, great RPG. I loved the humor in the whole story, narration, dialogs, quests, easter eggs and all the stuff. It gets that Monkey Island vibe, you know? the humor is like that.

Yeah, the humor in the game is great. I really need to jump back in and finish it.
