They're synonymous, but I can see how "work" might have bad connotations. It's important to find enjoyment in what you do after all. But if one wants to "git gud" it requires work. Work that I enjoy doing.
Btw, after reading "Mindset", the words "work" and "effort" carry a much more positive connotation.
It "Is" work. Dont sugarcoat it with effort Haha. You have to give full effort to make progress, but becoming good at anything in life is Work. By definition. Its repetition, reliably doing it possibly every day, not quitting even when it gets grueling and you want to stop.
I think if you want to Stop... then you should stop... because you then run the risk of working torwards something that just isn't fun even after you get good at it.
We're not talking about Scaling Mount Everest here. Its a video game... and the problem with Fighting Games specifically is The Work and Fun never happen at the same time for beginners...
For example... Learning to Anti-Air in SFV is Work but its definitely not fun... mostly because of how one dimensional that specific sequence is... so even after you master it... its just this thing you have to do but wish you didn't.
The way you look at it all from the outset can make a big difference, it never stops being fun, and really, should get even more fun the more your abilities increase.
EDIT: To your point about anti-airs, I mean, it's a tool in the box, you have to use it, right? And figuring out the best time to use it is part of the fun.
@illninofan
Yeah but unlike the other tools in your toolbox this specific tool has little to no Counterplay... if you see a Jump... Delete that person right out of the Sky.... I mean... because its invincible there's literally no reason not to do it (although I had Alexes dive trade with Ryu's DP a few times now... strange) you're always suppose to use it. If you don't... you'l lose.
The work & effort is part of the sense of reward you get when you feel your progress on the path of "Gitting Gud". It's why a lot of people enjoy playing Soulsborne, you feel immensely rewarded when you succeed at that game series.
To get good at DOA, Tekken and yes, SF, you have to put in the work and grind out training in order to achieve the reward of "gitting gud". If fighting games were easy, you'd get bored after a week or two.
Haha, I don't mind it at all. I love these conversations, talking with other knowledgeable and intelligent players is one part of "getting gud". xD That's why I came here. I'd be disappointed if I wasn't getting alerts as a result of these conversations. I'm not gonna go whoring for attention or trolling for alerts, though.
LoL... if you mean me then you're literally the only person that would say I'm knowledgeable and Intelligent... keep in mind I'm including Fictional people too... even those random voices in my head don't think I'm smart... and they should know... because they're not real.
When games become "Work" then something has gone horribly wrong...
