Free Step Dodge

I think it's just the trade system in action, i.e if 2 moves collide on the same frame the one that does more damage wins. that's why you sometimes can do moves that will win out over wake up kick during a trade, but since something like that is very difficult to time it usually happens by complete accident, still shouldn't stop you from trying it out though lol

I've done it several times, but not consistently.
