I found out a while ago that if you hit the home button it of course pauses your game. I do this when the internet icon flashes to see who is online by going to friends page.
There you can edit your speech balloon like "wanna fight" and check if someone wants to fight.
They can do the same so you can somehow communicate while still having DOAD active.
Not sure how useful that would be, but a thought.
