I travel back and forth between Japan and San Diego numerous times throughout the year, and from my experience in both competitive scenes: console games that have actual arcade cabinets are usually more successful. The DOA scene in Japan is lackluster at best, as most of the scenes are held in arcades and as we all know, DOA hasn't been on a cabinet lately. Most of the high level play is the very few who owned a 360, though even that is saturated by casuals who get demolished online and stick to single player thereafter.

Hell, I still play with people on a 6 year old VF5 machine over there on a regular basis on any given weeknight. Having a physical presence like that in a public area motivates people, especially when there's a crowd. My G155 mobile screen I take on trips can't compare to something like that; it's hard to hype people with DOA on a 10 inch screen on a sidewalk, next to a Tekken cabinet 50 inch LED w/ sanswa sticks + surround sound. Team Ninja says they wanted DOA more competitive, but they missed a HUGE opportunity in my experience: both presentation-wise and the longevity possibilities an arcade release can bring.

I haven't kept up with the SD scene lately due to not being here, but if it's anything like the SF:3S days, a cabinet is a must. It seems like console networking has more of an impact here though, so I actually have more hope for DOA here than in Japan. We'll see how it goes.

Arcades are kind of an awkward thing in the US at this point. A few exist on the West Coast, and on the East Coast it's like... well, if you find one it's pretty much a major landmark.

I see the fighting game community existing almost purely on consoles for most of the world now, and its hope for growth rests in three types of environments... LAN/Gaming centers, College club related meetups, and internet based competitive communities. That's just the direction things are going, even for Japan... although Japan still does, of course, have arcades, they too are slowly going the way of the dinosaur. It's only a matter of time for them.

Back to the WC though, they need to find a way to adapt to the changing of times because it's hitting them faster than it's hitting Japan. EC hasn't been reliant on an arcade scene for a long time, and I think thats why in DOA's case we've been able to motivate our crowd better than the WC. Our ways are slowly becoming their ways though, so the sooner they adapt and start finding other ways to congregate the better. I don't want to see WC miss out this time around.
