IGN's DOA5 Wiki Contributors Thread

Hey all! My name's Vince. I'm heading up the writing efforts for IGN's Dead or Alive 5 wiki. I'm a looooong time franchise fan so it's cool that I get to write about the nuts and bolts of a series I love. The thing is, a lot of people think our game is just for casuals, or that it's super scrubby. I feel like I have a shot at changing that with this wiki.

The thing is, it's a lot for one person to do, and I couldn't think of a better place than FSD to enlist help. I'm primarily looking for character specialists to help write the character specific sections. I know the game well enough that I could learn anyone in the cast pretty quick, but it would be faster, and just plain better if each character section were written by someone who has been playing them for a while.

http://www.ign.com/wikis/dead-or-alive-5/How_Dead_or_Alive_Works

Check the link for what I've done so far. That page, and all the pages it links to are my work so far. I also put together a character hub page, but I haven't added anything to the character pages themselves yet. All the vids and most of the screens are my work too. Definitely open to suggestions and feedback from you all.

If anyone is interested in lending a hand, message me through IGN here, or just reply to this thread. It's a chance to show people that there is more to this franchise than eye candy. Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Update, 10/3/2012:

Ok all, I have a format for the character pages. My Tina page is in its infancy here, but I'm linking it just to give you all a sense of the skeleton:

http://www.ign.com/wikis/dead-or-alive-5/Tina_Armstrong?objectid=117918

So there are three main sections to each character page: Playing (character name), Combos, and Nuts and Bolts.

Under the Playing "X" section, there is a bit more structure. It should have:
  1. An opening paragraph loosely explaining the character.
  2. A "Play 'X' If..." sub-heading, under which you can just list a few reasons the character is worth playing.
  3. A "General Strategy" sub-heading. Write 2-4 paragraphs on the core of the character's gameplan.
  4. A "Key Moves" sub-heading. Here you can name important moves for a character, how to execute them and what their properties are. A brief description of why they are important would be good too.
Don't worry, that's the most structured bit. The rest is pretty free-form. Under "Combos", just list the best combos you know for different situations (counter, hi counter, juggles, lead-ins to a CB, etc).

Finally, "Nuts and Bolts" is where we go wild. You can create whatever sub-headings you want and discuss specific tactics, mix-ups and situations. So if you look at my Tina page, I've made sub-headings for stuff like "How To Bait Holds" or "Landing an M.D.T.". These are just examples. You can discuss anything you think is useful to playing the character here, nothing is too in-depth.

Finally, I just want to stress again, if you don't feel comfortable with the wiki-editing interface, or you just want to throw an extra two cents into a section that already exists, please post here or contact me. If you just want to share info and have me do the formatting, no problem. If you want to do it yourself but have questions, reach out to me. My email is magnusreloaded@hotmail.com. If you try editing the wiki directly and you screw something up, don't worry! It's just the internet! We can fix it! I want everyone who has good info and a hunger to share it to do so without worrying about making mistakes or being a wiki pro.

Thanks again to everyone who has shown interest in helping out! :)

Grap3 If you know you're an asshole, do everyone a favor and say nothing at all.

Anyhow Vince, I'm working on some Bayman stuff over in his subforum. I have no qualms about sharing any of what I write, though I still need some more content. He's the only character I really know in this game, so hopefully some more people step forward for other characters.

Cool man! I've always wanted to learn him more. Yeah, either you can throw it in the wiki yourself, or I'll just throw it in for you once I have a format for the character pages. I'm looking forward to some hi counter offensive hold setups. I'll check out the sub forum. Thanks for responding! :)

Best of luck in this project. Hopefully some information can be shared across the two sites' wikis.

Thanks! Yeah, I mean info is free. If both site's wiki's can get better together, and more people learn about the ins and outs of the game, the whole community wins.

I would love to help out. Sounds like a pretty expansive project. As far as character specific stuff goes, I have been working on Ryu and Ayane in this one. Not sure what I will be good for yet but sign me up xD.

Something kinda funny is I was looking through that a while ago and was wondering how in depth you guys were gonna go with it. If nobody else helps I can cover different characters and break down situational based stuff.

Sweet! I've played Ryu a bit over the years (haven't we all, hehe) but my knowledge is far from extensive. And I don't think I've ever even attempted to play Ayane, despite her popularity. All I know about her is that in DOA5, 66KK4 is PRETTY GOOD!

I don't have anyone helping with either character so go ham! In case anyone was wondering, you just need to sign up for an IGN account (free) in order to edit the wiki directly. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, just direct me to a forum post you've made here at FSD where I can get the info and I'll incorporate it myself.

I'm going to be handling Tina and Sarah Bryant, but anyone who has something good with either can feel free to add as well. The more info the better!

Hey all! Just an update, I'm going to start my Tina section in force tomorrow.

Rikuto, your Bayman thread is real strong. I haven't read it completely, as I've been a bit bogged down with other projects, but I can already tell it will be an immense help.

Majestic, any time you want to point me to or share some stuff about Ayane or DAT NINJA, let me know ok?

Do we have any Brad vets up in here?

After I see how you format yours I will get to it. Ryu is pretty much done anyways. He doesn't have much. I don't have much written on Ayane yet, have been using her so just need to get it into words. There is also the issue of the patch coming up. I guess the wiki could be edited but still.

Cool, cool. Yeah no worries on the patch. I'll definitely update anything that needs updating. I'm going to come up with a format tomorrow some time so when I do, I'll ping you here. Thanks again for being willing to help man! :)

I main Tina and Kokoro -- If you need any help with anything let me know ;)

~Renarism

Sweeeeeet! I main Tina as well so I should have plenty but two heads are better than one. Can never have too much good info. If you could start putting together some thoughts on Kokoro though, that would be great! I don't have much experience with her so she's definitely a blind spot for me. Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead and add this info to the OP so anyone coming into the thread for the first time can see it too. Thanks again to everyone who has shown interest in helping out! :)

Looks extremely good. I can tell a lot of time will be spent simply looking at the awesome info on this wiki. :)

I'll just link below if you find a need to use it: It's a Helena basic combos and options video I made. Not good enough to list out everything for her, much less a wiki, since I'm still deep diving to learn this under-appreciated character. ;)

Thank you, thank you! There is sooooo much more I could add to the Tina page, but my goal right now is to get all the character pages to a minimum level of info before going nuts. I went a little in-depth with Tina, because she's been my main for a long time, but I won't be able to get as crazy with the characters I know less of. Still, it's a start.

Sora, thanks for the vid! I don't know thing #1 about Helena to be honest. I always wanted to learn her because her style looks so fluid and interesting (and because I have a funny way of losing to her). I'm sure there will be a place for that vid on the wiki! And if you want to share anything you find, you know where to go! :)

Granted our own wiki is bare so I'm probably going to have to steal half of that stuff back. Don't want Mr. Strong getting all pissed off that I'm ignoring the FSD wiki in favor of IGN's lol.

Of course man. And if you see stuff in our wiki that you want to add to the FSD one, go in! I just want the info to spread so more people know that there ARE some depths to mine in this game.
