Opinion: Top Players! (And those who feel like I do...)

Hello,

Intro:
I'm going to address a few things that I've noticed that I also believe to be a problem and to which I'm looking to ask for this community's help, especially the top players. Those uninterested in my anecdote and want to get to the point, feel free to skip the next two, it's just to explain where I stand and what I know, what I understand and why I am here.

Me:
Thirty years old media expert, writer and artist. Could consdier me a veteran but I'm really out of shape with no offline scene where I live, or the prospect of finding people interested. I love fighting games, loved them since you would stand in line at the arcade in front of a single box and try to beat the top guy to then get a turn at trying to beat the comp, which was of course set to hardest, and reaching Sagat was ah-mai-gaaad.
Can you win with a single move? SHORYOUKEN!
Can you tell me a move that takes down half your hp? SHORYOUKEN!
Can you name a move that has no counter? SHORYOUKEN!
Street Fighter one was where it all began. And then MK1 and the golden age of MK2.
Eventually I got a SNES for my tenth birthday and that's how it just went downhill for me... addiction.

The Game
I've played every fighting game up until 1998. Up until then I hit every title from Mortal Kombat on the SNES up until MK Trilogy and Tekken 5 on PS1, and then some in the arcades -
such as Soul Calibur 1-2.
DOA was always one of my favourite games to go with, due to its incredible character design, personality of the characters, and the numerous ways your character can look and fight, simply considering it the most complete fighter EVER.
Tekken was one-action-victory, MK is broken as is, Soul Calibur was about ringouts at the time... DOA was what really got my attention.
Bad news came when I had to sell my PS1 in tenth grade.
Recently I've heard of MK9 and bought a PS3 exclusively to play the game, but after long and stubborn struggle I decided to go into SC5 and then DOA5 came out. And I was all hyper about it.

The Problem
So here I am, all eager to begin, and I look at the moves list and bleh. So many options for a character, and no backbone to adhere to regarding move properties, and frame/matchup data is treated like some sort of taboo where everybody is like "BUY THE outdated GUIDE OR STFU!"
1. There is no "Character Expert" to turn to.
2. There is no "Game Data" available on the forum.
3. Top Players are as supportive of the community currently as NRS is of mk9 >_>
4. There is an attitude going around that I would rather just point at from a distance and hope that people know what I mean, notice themselves, and change it.

There is this paradox that some top players complain about how hard to grasp the game is, but at the same time they are not willing to help new players. Any wonder the game is not kicking off as it should?

The Conclusion
The reason why DOA suffers is not that the game is bad. The reason why it suffers is the zero support its top players are giving it and they're whining about rock paper scissors instead of getting in there and doing it and supporting us and being TOP like they were supposed to be.
I'm willing to put in effort for the community but I'm scrub level.
I'm a fighter.
Are you?

I'm willing to contribute game data knowledge, especially frame data and move properties. You can always discuss these things with me and other people interested. I'm not as interested in arguing about guessing and stuff as in figuring out how the game works.

Same here, but I use Christie exclusively.

I don't have Skype, and I'm having issues with logging in to MSN and Twitter, but I at least have Facebook.

He does have a point go to 8wayrun.com and you could see how well those forums are done. However all forums end up with bitch little girls crying about everything. Instead of working with the community to get better. SV5 and DOA communities are there own worse enemies.

I love both games but they can't seem to get it going

He doesn't have any points. There are plenty of people to talk to that are more than willing to share information about specific characters and have done so on multiple occasions. It's not their fault that casuals constantly argue with them and make people not want to bother helping when everything they say gets thrown back at them. If you're willing to accept the information, then information is shared. If you are going to argue and ignore facts and throw in your own incorrect opinion, you're just going to be ignored.

So there's big money on the line here.

Out of curiosity, how is educating my enemy going to improve my chances of beating them?

I certainly didn't get any handouts back during DOA 4. Hell I was the ONLY Bayman player in DOA 4. And if you approach me, I feel like I'm pretty generous as to how much I'm willing to educate. But come on now, do your own work. I have very little sympathy for the laziness going on here. You all expect us to do it, why can't we expect the same from you?

I think I'm with Rikuto on this one. How could the top players help without giving away all of their character secrets? Emperor Cow's tutorial videos are fairly helpful productions given to the community by the top players, so I think that would be a great place to start.

If anything, we need to do a better job creating tournament scenes around the globe, and the top players should care about spreading the DOA name because they can properly defend it when it needs to be, and they've personally already invested a shit-load of time into the game.

I'm actually one of the few Ayane players in this community that cares enough to help anyone out that asks for it. I've done this for a long time during DOA4. And I've been doing it (again) since DOA5's release. Both here at FSD and DOAW, through the forums and PMs. While also helping people try to understand the basics of DOA.

Like I was telling you yesterday, Glortor. There are people here in the community that are willing to help other players. You just have to ask around to find out who those people are, or at least mention that you are interested in such n such to get anywhere, as a start.

Also, like Rikuto pointed out, you shouldn't exactly rely on just "The select few" to get things done around here. It's a community forum, everyone should be getting in and contributing more to the forums with information (correct information, facts, not opinionated mumbo jumbo).

It's always a good thing to have in-game discussion on the forums, but like Raansu said earlier;

There are plenty of people to talk to that are more than willing to share information about specific characters and have done so on multiple occasions. It's not their fault that casuals constantly argue with them and make people not want to bother helping when everything they say gets thrown back at them. If you're willing to accept the information, then information is shared.

More, better, solid information gets added to the forums and wiki when more people decide that they want to help out with these things. Sitting around and waiting doesn't help anyone get anywhere. I try and do what I can to keep the Ayane forums healthy. I feel like that is my area and I personally make it my duty to keep it filled with solid information and not get cramped up with the same repeated stuff over and over.

If we want things to be better organized then more people should start stepping up to help make it happen and stop depending a few people to do things for them.

The problems I see are:

1. OFFLINE SUPPORT. There are NOT enough players going to local tourneys to help the game grow, period.

2. The forums with the OFFLINE VS. ONLINE debates.

ONLINE players NEED to realize that EVERY OFFLINE player has and continues to play ONLINE and start accepting that these players KNOW the difference from YEARS of EXPERIENCE. Granted some conversations could more civil, however I was here during doacentral.com and the arguments from waaaay back when KEEP coming up.

NEW MEMBERS! The SAME arguments you guys try to make regarding the validity of ONLINE PLAY have been MADE by the very SAME PLAYERS who you are now butting heads with.

They had to go OFFLINE, get smacked around, and REALIZE that they themselves were WRONG. Yet history keeps repeating itself.

3. ONLINE TRAINING.

I'm guessing this feature is not being utilized enough. If you have someone on you friend's list that's good with a character you wanna use, TRY IT.

I've spent time with Dr. Dogg for like 45min learning things about Mila (a character I don't main but enjoy using on occasion).

Also with Dr. Teeth.

We spent maybe 2/3 hours in there going over things Tina could do, I showed him some things I came up with for Ayane/Kasumi, we turned the frame data on to see what could be punished, etc, etc.

I haven't touched DOA since the PSN patch cuz I tried playing Sarah and realized she lost her KBD. Also since a new player is using my PS3 copy I'm on DOA hiatus till 360 update.

But anyway, his is my observation of things.

We need to develop a family here instead of trying to divide us. MK community is a family. Persona community is a family. KOF community is a family. Skullgirls community is a family. Why can't we work together people?
