About the episode:
The Nerd tackles the infamous Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Widely considered one of the hardest games of the 8-bit era. Even a master ninja would have trouble, if given the chance. Well, a chance is given, as the Nerd seeks out the help of a sensei master. Q-tips will drop, thumbs will slice - it's AVGN: Ninja Gaiden!
About the game:
Ninja Gaiden was developed by Tecmo, who also developed the Tecmo Bowl and Rygar series. It was one of the first two games, alongside Tecmo Bowl, to be released by the company for the NES. The game was originally released in Japan in 1988, under the title "Ninja Ryukenden", which literally translates to "Legend of The Dragon Sword".
Ninja Gaiden was very highly praised by Nintendo Power in 1989 and 1990, even being featured on the cover of the magazine's March-April 1989 issue, and being referenced in the following issue's Howard and Nester comic strip. The game debuted at number 3 on the "Top 30" list for July-August of 1989, right behind Zelda II and Super Mario Bros. 2. Even staying at number 3 the following issue.
