From where i'm at, I'd like to say nah but this could vary at this present time.
When PS2 released, I bought Devil May Cry 1 on my own when I was like 12 or 13 years old. No ID or anything. Which was a game that was well over my age at that time, but I think it's because the rating system wasn't such a big deal back then.
I feel like that the release of GTA: San Andreas for the first time is when game stores started asking kids on how old they are (GTA was all over the news about video game violence) which stores starting going full throttle about it or they needed permission for parents.
