I got the MSI G1 version. So glad I purchased it from amazon. They said I can return it if nvidia doesnt do anything. Im hoping nvidia gives us all 980s lool
Honestly, I don't have any room to talk I got like a 2 x 980 from my lab teacher for free when I mentioned I was worried my games wouldn't play on my computer I had just purchased (it's a really long story...) which is like crazy good. I'm speaking from a position of BIG time luck lol
Because it requires a piece of hardware that jacks up the price of your monitor anywhere from $120-$180 when they could have just adopted an old standard like AMD did. You cant truly futureproof something but you can make it last for a while by getting something that's too much for what you need now and ride it out for a few years.
Getting an 8gb card for 1080p is no where near futureproofing. You will never use 8gb vram on 1080, the highest currently is Shadow Of Mordor requiring 6GB on ULTRA. Cards with high vram are meant for people running a high resolutions.
On 1080p, 970 murders the 290x
Above 1080p, the 290x is the better buy
*Single setup
I will concede and say that for 1080p the 970 is the better buy but at the same time RIGHT NOW only Shadow of Mordor that uses 6GB but you will never know in the future. Besides I may well get a 1440p display and I want to have it. This may seem a bit juvenile to you but I would rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
^ @Goarmagon it's better to be safe than sorry so I think you are making the right decision. It doesn't sound juvenile at all. Who knows your computer needs better than... you, right? I think your choices are providing you with more flexibility.
Even at 1440p you wont come nowhere near 8gb. 4k most likely wont even hit 8gb. But its your money. Me personally would wait for AMDs 390x which will release this summer and is rumored to be 40% faster than a 980
