Sadly thats how this game works. Just practice holding and keeping as much momentum as possible.

If they mash they are unpredictable in the strategy (because they haven't one XD), but they surely use some moves more often than others. Just realize what they are and then wait for them: to make damage through holds shouldn't be too much hard.

Try not to drop combos,as it will give you the health advantage due to them not knowing their combos(thus being unable to dish out a lot of damage),keep the pressure going once you get into the position where you can attack them continuously,and use throws,many beginners are hold friendly.
