I have the free version on PS4 and I could not play online without plus.

I don't get that screen when I try to go online, even if I don't have PS+. The only difference is that this is the early pre-order edition from the HK PSN store which came with a ton of DLC extras, so I don't know is if it was because of that. I'd test again, but I have PS+ now.
