When I was up at my gaming lounge last week I was trying out Shinnok, Quan Chi, Ermac, Takeda, and Scorpion. the 1st 3, I was clueless on what to do with them really. Takeda wasn't much of a problem cuz I was practicing his B21 combo into his spear.

And Scorpion, I used him a little bit more than Takeda. I was just practicing that eternal vengeance combo into his teleport I see most Scorpion players use online or in tournaments. I might stick with him since I'm new to the game.

Shinnok a good choice, but depends on variation in necromancer he more of the zoning type.

Scorpion honestly is a good choice for you as he a good beginner character along with Sub Zero as well.

Funny cuz when I 1st grabbed Shinnok, I started off trying to use his Bone Shaper variation. lol. Quan Chi, I tried the variation with the portal buffs/nerfs and Ermac I tried his Master of Souls variation
