This week on the community spotlight we sit down with Electrified Mann.
Fresh off his first tournament victory at A-Kon, he opens the door on where he picked up his nickname, his issues with offline tournament pressure (and how he copes with it), the dissolution of the Nexus clan, wins, losses, flukes and a very, VERY special message for two offline tournament pros.
Lets get started!
JR: So, everyone has a little story behind their Handle/Screen name, how and when did you come up with the name E-Mann?
EMann: It was inspired by a Kingdom Hearts villain known as Larxene, who controlled electricity. I began using "ElectrifiedMann" in 2010, the year I first started playing DOA4. Sadly the game had already died away competitively I'd say around 2008-09.
JR: The gameplay in DOA4 always seems to illicit strong emotions one way or the other.
Overall, what were your thoughts on the game?
EMann: Personally, I enjoyed DOA4's much-faster gameplay. It had quite a few more interesting levels than DOA5 such as avoiding cars, dodging animals, etc. The ground game was just about equal for every character. And while fighting, a different characters theme would always play.
Can we both agree the music in DOA5 is dog shit?
Yessir WE CAN!!
I hate hearing the same thing EVERY SINGLE time. LOL
You’re coming off a tournament win at A-Kon 24. First things first; congratulations on the tournament victory. It was a pretty dominating performance by your Kokoro, but it wasn’t without a bit of controversy from what I’ve been told – talk about what it felt like to get that offline victory and, also, the issues that arouse after the fact.
I WENT IN!
That was the first tournament I’ve won, so I’m happy. . .but that victory shouldn’t have been my first. I should have won (an event) earlier but I didn’t take the time to study and prepare the way I should have.
That’s interesting, What could you have done better to prepare, what weren’t you prepared for?
I was really confident but it was like the (offline) experience. . . it got to me. The sounds, the crowd, the hype. It was all very difficult to deal with. And on top of that. . .ok, at final round (on the second day) Dead or Alive was the first game played in the very early morning. We get there for top 8 and theres ONE T.V for casuals/warm-ups. You could see it in my gameplay. . .Master was dropping combos left and right! I just know now that when I go to an event I need to get warmed up and to tune out the background stuff.
How were you able to overcome those background issues at A-Kon?
I found out at A-Kon that everyone has a special thing that they do to get comfortable. After I got sent to losers by (Nexus member) Sweet Revenge I found that mine was just to stand up and wear head phones.
Did you watch the match with Master?
Yes I did.
I don’t really do it at home but offline it helps me. Also, someone told me that standing intimidates. . .it could, I guess. Some may, some may not (be intimidated) but you have to take every advantage that you can.
As far as the controversy went, I understand you had some issues getting the footage of your match. Being that this isn’t the first time that an issue like this has arisen for an opponent who defeated Manny “Master” Rodriguez in Texas, do you feel that there was some effort taken to keep the footage hidden?
No controversy. It wasn’t really an issue but the guy at DFW kind of lost the footage. And, ya know, I just wanted people to see it! So I had him put it up. Even though the audio is missing.
(Aforementioned matches if you havent seen them)
I want to talk about your old clan/team: “The Nexus”. It was recently disbanded and I’m just wondering exactly what happened.
Thats the thing, Nexus is actually BACK as of yesterday! Its me, Sweet, Cali, Crazysteady and a mix of old and new faces. As far as the break up went. . .Well, Zakkurye was a GREAT leader in DOA4. He kept everyone motivated but when DOA5 came around he just didn’t adjust too well to the new systems. To make a long story short he didn’t show us (Cali, Sweet and I) the kind of love he showed us online. He didn’t hang with us, didn’t seem interested in talking to us and when he didn’t show up to cheer us on the second day. . .that was kind of it.
If I can say anything it’s that, sometimes, going from online to offline can be a difficult transition. Its much easier to be out going when you’re sitting in front of your t.v and sometimes it can take a while to figure out who you really are.
So, your next tournament is the Fall Classic on September 13th, correct?
Yesir!
Who’s going to win?
Well. . .this goes back to final round. With all the dudes you had in the tournament, from Lopedo, to Cali, to Sweet. . .it was hard. But as far as who could win – Master, Lopedo, Cali, Sweet, Me, Rikuto, Crazysteady if he comes.
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I didn’t ask who “could” win. I’m asking, who’s winning this tournament.
EMann is going to win. Emann is going to win his first major. With the characters I’m bringing and the different looks I’m going to show I don’t see me coming up short.
There ya go! Well, I want to thank you for taking the time to talk to me – I really, really appreciate it. Anything else you want to say before we cut?
Chosen1 and Rikuto are targets. Chosen1 was just a fluke and hes not beating me again.
OH. . . MY. . . GOD!
Hype.
