How to get behind a character?

In Command Training I always see numerous throw options for when you're behind a opponents back, but I'm never really in that situation unless for instance I block an Ayane player's BT move.

How do you guys get into a behind throwing position?
Sometimes I hop over with Tengu and grab them when they wake up kick, but this only works only for crouching throws. And I'm also not sure if it's only because it's an OH??

Anywho, much appreciated, I'm learning Lisa and kind of output by all these fun throws I don't think I'll be able to use.

In a real match, it's not really going to happen by your choice. You will most likely land all your back throws when you throw punish an attack that leaves the opponent backturned (somehow common against Ayane), or when you're using a no damage move that puts the enemy backturned and leaves them guessing (such as Lisa's 64T).

If we want to consider the Free Step system, the fastest way to move to the back of the opponent in DOA5 is actually character specific. For most of the cast, holding 9 while close (or 669 when far) seems to be the best way, but for Virtua Fighter characters for example 8 is better than 9. If you're Brad Wong, you can hold 9 and repeat H every once in a while.
This is cool to know and all, but good luck doing it in a real match.

Just in case you're not familiar with the numbers notations for directions:

Out of curiousity , what's the difficulty in using it in a real match? Most of the FSD's preformed in his videos are done during stuns.

I don't know of anyone that uses it, it appears to be a pretty obscure unexplored aspect of the game.

This is what I came up with in DOA2U (doesn't work in DOA5) using Jann Lee. This specific tech is actually extremely strong: http://www.freestepdodge.com/threads/crazy-jann-4h-tech.5705/
This is for DOA5LR, pretty useless: https://u.pomf.is/nnkemo.mp4

e-mann does this consistently in real matches. That was his videos that push myself to understand how to do it :

look at 0:13

or here at 0:12

another way to get behind is to use the ropes

i give here a long description of different ways to get behind. it's in french but use google translate to get some ideas.

http://www.critical-stun.com/index.php?threads/freestepdodge-comment-passer-dos-à-ladversaire.423/

to sum up you can get behind:

1) during a stun
2) With enviromental stun (2 sub categories)
  • ropes
  • breakable objects
3) during opponent's movement (if Hayabusa is doing WS kick , P you cant get behind him) (see the link above to have a list of each characters moves)

4) while countering some moves.
