There are many players from the Fighting game Community who do not understand what Defensive Holds(DH) are, and mistake them for "over powered" reversals. DH share a common ground with reversals, and that is the ability to counter your opponents attack. What differ between a DH and reversal, is gameplay application. The term hold is short for Submission hold. A submission hold is:
  • The sport of hand-to-hand struggle between unarmed contestants who try to throw each other.
DH are in fact a form of throw, and is simply not just a reversal. Thus the reason why DH do as much damage as throws in Doa. Unlike Reversals(in other 3D fighters), DH have a long whiff animation as well as an audio cue. These two combine make it easier to Punish DH than it is to punish reversals. DH also get 50% more punishment against throws, than reversals do in other 3D fighters. DH are also different than reversals due to its ability to break Critical states (staggers), and a Low Just frame DH to gain frame advantage out of Critical state, as well as avoiding high attacks.

Defensive Hold Revision:
  • Frames 13-22 = 100% revision
  • Frames 5-12 =125% revision(Counter hold)
  • Frames 1-4 =150% revision (High-Counter hold)

As you can see from above, DH revision is based upon the frames (time) you DH your opponent. The earlier you DH, the less damage you get.

Defensive Hold Class:

DH class is based on what attacks can be held. There are 8 classes of attacks:
