Who here plays chess?

I just bought a new chess set ( <- Link right there) and it got me thinking: there's typically a large overlap between fighting game players and chess players. Who here plays? Anybody any good? There are quite a few chess apps on mobile devices, some with cross platform play, and I wouldn't mind getting some games in. Let me know if you play, if you mostly just get bodied, and what you have access to online-play-wise.

I play chess. Years ago, I played tournaments. My best result was finishing second by 1/2 point . Leave the game for 9 years, and in 2012 I started playing this again, but my level fell significantly. If you wanna play with me, I used to do in Yahoo Games. If you know any other page, tell me.

Honestly the best website for it is Chess.com and they have an app for Android and iOS that works with it as well. If you have a PS3 or Vita I'd suggest Pure Chess as it's my current favorite. I was never second place level for any tournament so you would have to fall pretty far to make it even. I am pretty solid, though.

That was a damn short game, haha. The general level of the casuals is not always so high...my second random game on there I actually pulled off a four move checkmate. I thought people generally saw that on the first or second move but not that guy. I'll add you in a sec.

You can just play immediately. I'm sitting online now. That's the maximum time if you have to wait for some reason. The live chess I'm not sure if we can do and still play with friends.

Sounds like WiZzYx would be fun to play.

I'd like to get back into playing the game myself sometime soon. It's on my list of "Things To Do When I Can Get The Time To Do Them". Before I play ANY game, I'll want to take time to restudy and brush up on my opening repertoire (Evan's Gambit, Alekhine's Defense, Modern Benoni Defense, and various lines vs the Sicilian, Pirc, French, etc.).

Out of curiosity, WiZzYx, back when you were active, about what rating/class level did you play at?

College tourneys mostly, and amateurs tourneys in the city, but with a respectable level of play. I started to read a little more openings theory, finals (square rule, opposition, dvoretzky rules, etc), tactics and strategies, but never take it seriously enough, to register as a FIDE player.

Chess is a game that is really up to you how you play. You can play with a clock, or without one. You can play with a set offline with local players, or you can play online (lag NOT being a factor in chess, except for some EXTREMELY fast blitz matches) with players all over the world. The chess community is MASSIVE overall, having numerous options for online servers (free and paid) to play on, numerous tournaments to compete in, numerous clubs to join and practice with, numerous resources to study the game (books, online tutorials, recorded matches, software to analyze your games, ... ), etc., etc., etc.

The world of competitive chess is like a DREAM to a FG player looking to try his/her hand at something different. There's no necessity to reach a certain level of play before going out to compete, you're not trashed by trolls for not playing up to par with someone, the game doesn't change with new patches/updates/iterations/etc., you don't have to travel far to find a place to play, you can always feel like you are making progress with time invested, and on and on ...

I'm down to play whenever, though I'd prefer to NOT play blitz style like Wizzyx does haha. I'm rusty as hell and need to get back into things without constantly moving and then realizing too late that I moved too short or too far. Seriously, I forgot how much pressure that faster style puts on you.

Wizzyx, I have been messing around and using your advice to me last night, so at least my pawn structure won't be as horrible now! Haha. Not sure when I can play tonight. I only have about an hour free right now and then I have things to do for the foreseeable future. Anyone that wants to play, add me on Chess.com using my tag that I use for everything. I'll play anyone but...don't expect much from me just yet. I'm rustier than I thought.
