Is online completely meaningless?

To the extent of recognition and fame online is meaningless because the level of skill there is so inconsistent that its hard to tell if you aren't just simply skilled at handling scrubs. Regardless I don't need that form of recognition or feel a desire to be recognized as a top player by the entire community. The acknowledgement of the friends I've made on this site suffices for me. All I care about is having a great enjoyable match with any person I play with whether it be online or offline. To me, that, and the prize money as icing on the cake are what tournaments are all about lol. Many of us on FSD are only able to play with each other through online and every single person I have faced on here has been a difficult opponent to beat. I love the matches I have with you guys and it motivates me to improve and get better so I can be a challenging opponent to you all. My goal is to have fun but I also take the matches I have with FSD peeps online seriously because it is the only way for me to gauge my development. The randoms in ranked do not suffice. Without online and this community I guarantee you the development of my skills would be extremely slow because it's not every day I have the time to travel through the city to go to casuals. And I most definitely don't have the money to travel far for tournaments. My interest in DOA would also be non existent because it would be difficult to find people to play with consistently. Playing with you guys online has sparked an interest in offline for me because it would be a waste not to try it out after attempting to keep up with such skilled players.

EDIT: That said Team Ninja needs to fix the bumass netcode. There's no reason I should have problems playing against people in the U.S unless they have a shitty connection. VF5 FS has 1000x better netcode than this on WORLDWIDE.

Except fucking stupid wins online frequently, so fucking stupid could from a certain perspective be fucking smart.

My opinion: if you're playing online, you're fucking stupid. At least if my experience is representative.

Without online, fighting games would have stayed in the dark ages. It was due to online play that revived the fighting game scene. Besides that, Mexican internet isn't going to do much for you lol.

Hence why I'm probably moving on to Tekken. I'd just go back to VF5FS if it didn't seem like it was a ghost town (also, there's just enough lag to make some things that should work not work in my experience and it's fucking maddening). Competent netcode has helped the fighting game scene keep growing. Frankly the ignorance of the larger consumers of fighting games as to how they should play helps too. Although If it was all DOA5 quality nobody would bother.

I am kind of curious, though, for people who have both: is it better on 360 at all? I think the Xbox Live advantage is kind of oversold. Especially since now everyone has wifi on both systems.

VF5FS isnt a ghost town for me.... just put the connection settings to world. The lag wasn't to bad either, just a really minor slowdown.

2 frames is everything in VF, though. I can 6p after blocked p and always, always beat 2p offline. Doesn't always happen online and it drives me fucking nuts. The netcode is much, much better than DOA5 but the frame data is so tightly tuned any deviation is hard to deal with. Plus you start second-guessing after that happens and it's just no fun to play.

That's how practically every online game plays these days with the exception of ArcSystemWorks games.

The major plus side is this:

Custom music means I don't have to listen to that godawful rap in the menus.

It depends on the person really. All I know is that for very small but vocal part of the DOA community to just discredit or just plain not accept how the majority of players are able to compete just speaks of elitism. But when some of those online warriors do show up and beat offline players then it just proves that the skill gap between good players online and pro players offline is not as wide as the high level competitive community thinks.

If your an online warrior, then be the best online warrior you can be.
If you want to be the best offline player, then go to offline events and prove yourself.
Its really quite simple.

Launch tournament. No need to wait.

Also, there is no ONLINE player and OFFLINE player. We are all players!

There are just matches that matter and matches that don't, and the matches that matter are at offline tournaments, where the game is played best (and coincidentally, you can have the most fun by socialising with other players)
