Females generally are more appealing in games because males get to play females they consider attractive, and they're often times the better fighters in videogames. Plus they have alot more interesting clothes and appearance options than males do, and more variety concerning different fetishes and stuff. Men have that in games too, but it's much lesser to appease western players.
All this is your personal taste though.
How are female characters objectively the better fighters, for example?
First of all, out there there are many players who prefer to use male characters and many players who find them more interesting over female characters, as I said. Many guys I saw refuse to main a female character, for example (it's ridiculous and baffling but it's true).
Yeah, JAPAN might prefer female characters but that is another big can of worms and I certainly do not have the knowledge to talk about it, but Europe and America always leaned towards male characters (and this is also why DOA got ridiculed so much, for having too many girls).
Second, the variety you mention is mostly variety of the fanservice type. You even said female characters cater to more fetishes than male ones.
It's not this variety that makes a character stand out though, at least to me.
Female characters have the variety that makes you think "Oh this one is the milf, this one is the jailbait, etc". It might be varied but it all boils down to pretty and sexy girls. How varied is this? It's arousing but it's not what makes a cast varied. They're just attractive girls. This is not a bad thing but as I said, but is it really varied?
Male characters on the other hand have old men, monsters, beasts, lanky types, huge types, comic relief, while still having attractive guys in their ranks. Isn't this the first thing you think with variety?
Isn't this the sort of thing that spices a FG cast?
Not to mention, uglier characters tend to make beautiful characters stand out and viceversa. It makes if feel more refreshing and varied, IMO.
Also are you implying that male fanservice is just a bone thrown to make western fans less angry? That might be true with DOA but certainly not true with Namco...
