Who will be cut in DOA6?

I get that many don't like the old man, but he is an iconic, unique character within DOA and l have no idea, why they would cut him. The worst that might happen: He has to be unlocked as a bonus character outside story mode.

The difference is that competition is greater now for limited resources and being the token old man character isn't enough anymore. Look what happened to Wang in some of the Tekken games. I don't think he was even announced for T7 yet either [but of course cat girl idol thing does before him] which should give you an idea about old man characters in this current climate.

It's already a bad sign TN

1. Made Genfu one of the few playables that didn't get a special character reveal gameplay trailer for vanilla [not worth wasting marketing resources/time] and his reveal was from the story trailer that lasted a quick second

2. It didn't help that his very brief appearance in the story trailer was an accurate representation of his brief/minor role in the story. His entire role is 'time to teach Eliot everything I know'. He is suffering from Leon syndrome right now where the character is still technically around, but TN doesn't know what to do with him besides be a stepping stool for Eliot. Ever since his grand daughter sub-plot or whatever was resolved he had no goal outside of Eliot.

3. TN seems to lately been pushing for Eliot to succeed him ever since DoA 4. Even more aggressive by the end of DoA 5. Before you say that's is not possible look at what happened to Ein and Tengu. Hitomi/Hayate largely replaced Ein and Nyotengu largely replaced Tengu. Why? Story reasons. It's possible Eliot will start 'borrowing' a bunch of Genfu tools which will make the latter less relevant.

His only saving grace is he is decent in gameplay, but that can change fast since the developers are no strangers cutting off the balls on characters if they really want to.

I don't particularly care if Genfu makes the cut or not since I never had a strong opinion about the character, but I'm seeing the reality of the situation and it's not looking good.

Heres my list of characters that i feel will be cut in at least the vanilla version of DOA6

-All the VF characters (VFers were never meant to be a permanent part of the cast so players who main them better accept the fact that they won't return in the next DOA and look into other mains. They were a nice gesture for TN's respect for Sega and the VF series but them using up slots for unique and original characters were already a bad stigma in 5 and players looking to play as those characters should stick to VF)

-Alpha(Sorry jello lovers but alpha no longer fills the role of evil kasumi clone now that TN introduced phase 4, she was officially killed off in the canon storyline in 5, is the least popular character on the roster, and all while having no dlc potential to give TN a reason to bother including her, at best TN will give some of her unique stuff to phase 4 so the tiny amount of alpha users will have her as a replacement)

-Ein(The metro sexual amnesiac will once again face the chopping block i'm afraid. Ein the the only character on the roster who has yet to evolve from his debut in DOA2, no new moves, stances, animations, and simply is always copy and pasted in each new installment with little changes. He has had little fanfare on his return in 5U with even his fans being disappointed in him from his lack of new tools to his awful costume selection. it doesn't help that he doesn't exist as an actual person anymore in the canon with him being hayate and all. Even worse for his chances is that he was already replaced by hitomi whose essentially a superior version of him with boobs so Ein pretty much has everything against him in returning and i'm afraid even the fan demand he had going for him in 5 when he was cut won't be the same in 6 due to those same fans being dissapointed in how he played in 5U)

-Gen fu(I'm afraid the Token old guy plot armor won't save this old man this time, TN has hinted at Eliot replacing him since DOA4 and its even more apparent in 5 after Eliots chapter where Fu claimed to officially teach Eliot his style, They already share similar moves in 4 and 5 so now in 6 Eliot will inherit the full repitoire of genfu's skill making fu redundant)

-Rachel(Yes you read right a female character will have a chance of being cut and out of those Rachel has the highest chance i'm afraid. Rachel for all intents and purposes is one of the least popular of the females, has no canon storyline, isn't even part of the NG roster anymore since the first one, and as a DOA character doesn't really have any uniqueness about her. Tina fullfils the buxom blonde grappler while Leon fulfills the powerhouse air throw specialist, Her role in 5 was to be the replacement of spartan whose already a fusion of Leon/Bayman who i feel neither will be cut in 6 due to their completely different playstyles from each other. so in the end i see her having a pretty good chance of being cut)

The VF cast will not be in it for obvious reasons. Alpha and P4 too I hope. And I guess that's it. TN has learn that a lot of people care about Leon and also Ein(However he might get cut, who knows)

Ein is all I play now in DOA... if he doesn't return in DOA6 I'll be mad salty to the point where I wouldn;t even buy the game, only way I'd still buy DOA6 is if they made Hitomi more Ein like(less cutesy moe whoops i slipped while cooking trope) or made Hayate DOA3 Hayate but without the cartwheel.

I'm starting to understand the feelings of everyone losing their main character. It is difficult to hear someone say "You will have to main someone else in DOA6." as if it's simple when it's not. Your potential character is missing and your fighting potential has been severely limited or reduced. I truly feel for the players. I mean, even I have a character that is likely to not return and he comes from another game. So even if Ein or anyone else that gets cut, you will still have the deep respect and acknowledgement for going through with the character and having fun with it until it's end. I don't like to see Akira getting the boot either, but yeah. Time goes on. (Hopefully they make a character similar to him in terms of execution and rewards.)

But for the inside jokes to spite players that want them to leave, I'm simply going to use another guest character that might be an iconic dolphin who was simply legendary for traveling in the seas fighting many sea creatures and entering the game...! hopefully it's not a character straight out of a low tier anime show and thrown in the game for the obvious purpose. #trolol

Don't know why people think TN will be all cut-happy for DOA6, if you look at their history its completely the opposite

DOA2(bayman was cut and replaced by Leon but came back permanently since his return in DOA2HC)
DOA3(only Tengu was cut, everybody else returned)
DOA4(everybody from 3 returned and even Tengu was brought back)
DOA5(Ein, Leon, Tengu, and Spartan were cut with Leon and Ein coming back as themselves in 5U while Tengu and Spartan were essentially replaced with Nyotengu and Rachel)

So in essence up to DOA5 the only permanently cut characters were the playable bosses and guest characters with Bayman, Leon, and Ein being the only non boss/guest characters ever cut in the series but eventually came back as playable in the later expansion of the game they were originally cut from so them being cut again for DOA6 is highly unlikely.

Going by this for DOA6 the only likely cut character will be the VF characters(guest characters) and Alpha(playable boss character that died in the canon) which will free up 5 slots for whatever new characters TN adds for 6

Except...

DoA 1 had 10 playable characters
DoA 2 had 12 playable characters
DoA 3 had 17 playable characters
DoA 4 had 21 playable characters counting Spartan
DoA 5 currently has 34 playable characters [soon to be 35] counting the four VF guests.

They added several playable characters not counting the VF since the course of DoA 5 [Mila, Rig, 152, Momiji, Rachel, Marie Rose, Phase Four, Nyotengu, Mecha Raidou, Honoka, and whoever the new one is] and that is not including the obligatory new faces that will debut in DoA 6 to eat up spots which will likely be at least two like DoA 5.

DoA 5 vanilla had a debut roster of 24 playable [that includes three VF guests that didn't take the same amount dev resources compared to a DoA made from scratch so really 21 DoA characters] so assuming DoA 6 has at least that roster size then people being cut in inevitable. As I explained back on page two with this post even if I don't count for four VF, people being cut are inevitable since I don't see them doing a 30+ roster on debut assuming DoA 6 is not pretty much another expansion of DoA 5.

DOA6 will have to be a complete reboot and full step ahead of 5. We are now fully in console generation 8. After DOAX3 there will be no Team Ninja cross generation games anymore ( NIOH is already the first real PS4 exclusive game). DOA6 being a real PS4 game (maybe even exclusive), the characters and stages have to be graphically completely redone. The better and demanding the graphics get each console generation, the longer and more expensive the development gets. Look at all the other fighters of this console generation. They've had initial rosters of just 8 to at most 24 characters. There's no way DOA6 will cram in 35 characters at the beginning, no way! Koei Tecmo is the last company, I'd expect to be that accommodating and generous. ;)

I agree. Even if we didn't get any "significant" DOA updates from TGS at least we see evidence (like NiOH) that TN has transitioned to the PS4 very well. Someone here (I think it was you actually XD) made a good point that X3 on the PS4 will probably give us a good idea in terms of what the characters in 6 will look like. Their claim that they could only include 9 of the 15 girls given that they're significantly updating the models means that we'll likely have a smaller roster in DOA6 as well.

I doubt DOA6 will be a completely rebooted overhaul you think it will be, just look at the gap between DOA3(og xbox) and DOA4(360) or even NG:Black compared to NGII they were a minor upgrade despite the later sequels being built from the ground up on a newer gen console. i expect the same for DOA6 compared to LR. accept with higher texture resolutions, AA, and bigger more interactive environments slapped on.

we'll just have to wait and see since DOA6 will be a late 2017 game at the earliest

Wait, you are talking about the games having the same art style. Yes, the art style stayed the same, but the games were still completely new and all graphical assets (character models, stages, textures...) were new. These character models superficially look the same, but they are still different character models, which take time and money to develop:

If you think, Team Ninja will get away with using the same character models as well as the same stages as DOA5 for DOA6, just with higher textures resolutions...lol. That is actually not how video game developing and marketing works...
Better graphics do sell games! I know, there are purists, annoyed with all graphical talk and dick measuring, but it is a fact, that good graphics sell games. It's what you can convey the easiest to the potential customer in trailers or with screens. Especially Team Ninja was always famous for upping their game regarding graphics and they will again.

At TGS we got a good glimpse, of how DOA6 characters will probably look like with NIOH's protagonist, William:

Bradman.jpg

It's the same art style as DOA5 and he looks like Bayman wearing Brad's wig, but this character model features at least double, probably even triple (if we are talking about male characters) the polygons, animation bones, texture quality and shaders of DOA5 models. Again, a model like this is very expensive and time consuming. You won't see 35 of these in DOA6 at release.

He spoke the truth.
I believe all the characters will be back at some points, but I'm not sure Gen Fu, Ein, Raidou, Lisa, etc. will be there on release.

I mean, Lisa for instance, could still be in the Story Mode as a NPC (like in Mortal Kombat)..

All the "unpopular" characters are unsafe...
