DOA5 E3 Version Q&A

I see a bunch of questions and I'm sure you guys have more, so if you need anything answered regarding the E3 build, Sarah and/or Bass, please ask here and Rikuto and I will do our best to answer the questions. Please don't ask about anything not in the E3 build, because even if I have info, I won't be able to share it.

If I'm not feeling lazy, I may update the main post with all the questions and answers... we'll see. I'm at MLG this weekend, but I'll try to get on when I can. If I can't get on much, I'll be answering questions early next week.

Have at it.

Speaking of which, I understand Sarah not to be in the E3 build thus only being in Trailer form. So about Bass, I noticed we have a few pictures of him in battle, any word why he wasn't officially announced and or shown in video form to compliment the pictures we received?

Another question is why didn't the entirety of the E3 build Cast have exhibitions?

Last question for now. Although still too early to tell, what are your rank placings for the current E3 cast?

I can't comment on Tecmo's announcement strategy. All I know is that Bass, Sarah and tag mode were there for special behind closed doors exclusives. Rikuto and I were able to spend about 15 minutes with it to give you guys the info at the end of the broadcast.

I did the exhibitions with assistance from Silent Legend. The plan was to do the 8 new characters since the 4 demo characters have been covered to death. However, due to time constraints, I was only able to finish 7 of the 8 videos, leaving Lei Fang out. She'll be done next week sometime.

I don't want to rank the characters because I played several different builds at E3 and there were changes in each. However, I think hands down that Bayman is the best character in the current version of the game.

It was unfortunate that my Computer acted up on me so was able to see little to none of the remaining clip after Manny's Interview. So I'm now looking at it, and from what I'm hearing, interesting stuff. As far as Tag Power Blows go, I honestly feel that they'll be used primarily for quick damage to switch out the character with lesser health. And not surprised Ms Bryant is top tier and glad her flamingo stances are transitioned well, she sounds pretty damn scary. Um, Vanessa Williams anyone, lol, I kid...

Oh okay, makes plenty sense, I'll be awaiting Bass/Sarah's reveal. Great job on the exhibitions nonetheless.

Hmm, can't argue with that, that would be you ranking characters from each version, definitely understood. Also, after seeing Rikuto's Bayman at work, it's safe to say I humbly agree.

Appreciate the response.

It would be nice if you could shed some light on characters like Kokoro, Leifang and Christie that were barely used or only touched by casual players. New moves or just a general first impression on how they work with the new gameplay mechanics considering the whole "character individuality" deal TN is pushing
Would really appreciate it.

hey dogg !
so I heard you guys got a chance to play tag...

hows the general feel of it ? does it feel like old tag again ?
i was also wondering .. I remember you mentioned tag powerblows ... does this require both characters to have <50% ? or just the character on screen ?

(by the way great job with the coverage :) )

I notice in some videos there was an option for "Casual" and "Professional" type. It mentioned this changed the camera type and hit effects, but did Team NINJA say anything else was changed? I've heard bits that there are some system changes based on the option.

Peter actually mentioned in the following interview that both characters need to have less than 50% health, which is interesting as one character will obviously be regaining health by the second:

hmmm this is quite interesting ..
feels like they want powerblows to be used in some form of desperation state only .. and not anytime like before ..

not sure i agree much with that since they are slow, unsafe, and holdable... but thats just me ...

obviously scrubs are gonna spam it .. but a pro will use it with caution and in certain situations mainly like whiff punishes .. there are also a few all or nothing gamble powerblows done by the pros here n there .. lol which are also fun.. lol

still, I'm acctually ok with the 50% health powerblow trigger ... makes it feel like some sort of a comeback mechanic without acctually being a comeback mechanic .. if that makes any sense ...

and in tag double 50% may seem unlikely if you have the upper hand but ..the way damage goes in tag mode .. i see it very possible ..

im really looking forward to tag ! I hope they can setup some tournaments for it ..

i can see it now .. one massive doa tournament event ..

1 singles
1 tag
1 team tag ...
1 team battle ..
I love that doa tournaments can fit into so many formats :)

Right now, current plans for the Philadelphia events are 1v1 singles and 2v2 team tag. We do team tournaments for all of our games, but for DOA we've always done 2v2 as that element of team synergy really needs to come into play.

Is Sarah really that much better than the rest of the cast? And can you comment some more about Akira? I'd hate to go online and see a bunch of VF chars

Also how's the camera control/restriction during win poses - similar to DOA4?

That's all I can think of right now. You guys covered a good bit in the IPL videos

1) Could you talk about the Critical Burst mechanic a bit more? It can only be done at the end of the stun threshold to then guarantee a follow-up, correct? That means that I still have to play the DOA4 stun-guessing game before that Critical Burst hit, wouldn't it? How is that so advantageous? What were everyone's Critical Burst moves?

2) Was the defensive hold frame data toned down any further than the Alpha Demo? 18 frames is definitely an improvement over previous titles but I still feel that it's too lenient.

3) How about the large string delay? Was this fixed and reduced at all?

4) This is more of an IPL related question but what was with JediRobbe's and IPL's hate for arcade sticks? JediRobbe even went as far as to mock players like Kayane for wanting to use them. Don't tell me their excuse is "They wanted an even playing field." Giving Kayane who hasn't seriously played DOA in at least a decade an additional handicap by forcing her to use a stick hardly seems "fair." Hopefully this doesn't continue in future events that are seemingly labeled as "tournaments."

5) Another IPL question, you mentioned future IPL DOA events in the future. You obviously probably can't talk about anything because of A) embargoes and/or B) these things are still in the works but will actual DOA players be able to attend without being invited and will we be given more than six days notice?

Thanks!

I'd rather see everyone using VF characters instead of everyone using ninjas. I think we all need a break from being in rooms where everyone but one person uses Busa

There will be articles on that (some of which should've already been up, but oh well). I'd rather use this thread for more specific questions.

I have to leave this to Rikuto. He played tag more than I did, and I never touched tag in the previous DOA games. Although I don't foresee tag being a major (or even minor) component of DOA5 tournaments, sorry.

What about Sabakis (Akira, Kokoro and Lei Fang have some, right?)
Are you still vulnerable to throws during the "reversal frames"? Are there Sabakis that counter other moves than high attacks? Did they introduce attack classes?

And did they change the Slow Escape implementation? I still think the "mash away" approach is pretty dumb... I'd prefer the Soul Calibur stagger escape with a well defined number of required inputs and maximum effect.

Sarah played exactly like she should. She didn't feel overpowered, just really good. I'll be very disappointed if she gets toned down. The other characters need similar tools so they can have the same advantages Sarah does.

Camera control during win poses? I play on stick so I don't know if I can even do that (no right analog stick) but I honestly didn't try.

Why are you trying so hard to find negative aspects of this game?

1. As I explained multiple times on the stream, some characters can burst in as little as two attacks. There are also sit down stuns that you can't hold out of. For example, Bayman's staple is Stun > 3K for sit down stun > Critical Burst. You can only counter the first hit in that scenario. Now I will say that people can still try to work the classic stun system and that's really frustrating to fight against but you can choose not to use it quite a bit. I'd like to see more ways around the classic system, but progress is being made.

2/3. Seemed the same.

4. You completely misquoted and misunderstood what jedirobb said. He didn't want to hear complaints about controller issues and character choices because we already know all of that. The reason Kayane couldn't use a stick is the same reason I couldn't. We were playing at E3 on kiosks. There's simply no way to easily hook up a stick in that situation. For the record. Kayane was told she'd have to use a 360 pad 2 weeks in advance.

5. I've told you specifically twice already. There will be event(s) open to the public and you will have at least 4-8 weeks advanced notice.

Which Bass moves led to sit-down stuns again? :3: :K: perhaps? I'm forgot how a sit-down stun actually looks like.

Referring to Rikuto...

do kasumi's kick moves have to connect to teleport into another move?

Yes.

All the following questions I'm about to ask are about Christie, and Christie alone.

1) Have the neutral Christie's Dokuja-Fujin (DF) stance transitions (:2::P+K:, :1::P+K:, and :3::P+K:) been removed completely? And if so, do the inputs:2::P+K: and :8::P+K: only do the DF sidestep?

2) Have they actually expanded on Christie's :3::P::P::P: string with safer alternatives to the third punch as seen in DOA4 (DOAD)?

3) In DOA4 (DOAD), Christie had two NH launchers in DF stance, with all her normal stance moves requiring the stun threshold to launch. If the DF stance is only limited to string cancels (as Rikuto implied on Day 1), does this mean her :3::3::P: and :9::K: have become NH launchers, or does the stun threshold still apply for them?

4) Christie doesn't offer much in the way of throws, and thus made her HCB throw the most damaging, while her BT (Back-Turned) throw (:6::F+P:) was the most useful. Have they improved on the BT throw in anyway, such as frame advantage on Hi-Counter?

5) How is Christie's DF throw done in DOA5? Is it similar to DOA3? Does Christie's DF throw have frame advantage on Counter or Hi-Counter, or at least a sit down stun?

6) I noticed a lot of the holds that used to launch the opponent were removed for some characters. Is it the same for Christie's low-punch hold?

7) What new moves were added for Christie, if any, and how useful are they in an actual fight?

8) I heard that Power Blows were now character-specific with the new adjustments they made to the button mapping. Would Christie's normal stance guard break (:4::P+K:) be that move when health is 50% or less?

9) How evasive is the DF sidestep compared to other sidesteps in the cast? Is it possible for her to go completely around an opponent if certain linear strings are done? Does it duck all mids similarly to Helena's :2::2: from BKO?

10) This one's in good humor. What does Christie's throw cliffhanger look like? And on a scale of 1-10, how would you rate Christie's cliffhangers?

A lot of questions I did want to ask I had to scrap because of the new gameplay system changes, so I'll have to come up with another set of questions later on. 'Til then, this is all I got for now.
