^Kinda that. Basically, they got this idea in their heads that he should be "relatable" and "more human," and they thought the best way to do that would be to make him more flawed and act more like an everyday guy.

Yes, that's right. They thought a cryptic super-ninja who kills his friends in an allied ninja clan as part of a training exercise and single-handedly saves the world every-other weekend in a tightsuit should be portrayed as if he were one of your neighborhood church friends on steroids.
