Disclaimer: This is a partial joke, mostly serious topic. I'd appreciate pointers instead of slags and please no drama.

My name is Akhi, and I'm a scrub. I first found out that I was a scrub when I started playing DOA4 on Xbox One. I started out with Brad Wong and basically could do nothing but hold when playing against other players. No combos, no launchers, predictable setups, nothing. I soon found that my Brad Wong versus DOA4's 'safe mode' ninjas was too much for me to bear as Brad Wong's attacks were considerably slower on DOA4. It wasn't too fun to have to rely on holds to win and frame data might as well have been Greek language to me. I started looking for other characters to main and somehow stumbled upon Lisa, finding that she fit my playing style more than Brad Wong, mainly due to having hi counter holds that take huge swaths of health.

When the original DOA5 was released it threw a lot at me at one time. I had to learn about sidestepping, moves that track, guard breaks out the wazoo, all kinds of shit. My love for the game allowed me to step it up a notch. I l got DOA5+ and made it to S+ rank on both but I realize that I am still a scrub - network stability can dictate the outcome of a match and the S+ ranked guys that were still playing that could wipe the floor with my Lisa just ducked me repeatedly after I managed to get a lucky win - of course that just left the guys who I could beat with no problem.

Fast forward to now playing DOA5U, I have found that I get a lot of 'hatemail' from guys that I beat, except that I'm starting to realize that it's not actually hatemail, or something like that. A lot of guys complain about me not doing CB setups and combos. My first thought it's like 'aw you're just a scrub who has sour grapes because you lost' but then I actually listen to these guys before slagging them off. TakedaZX is no scrub by any stretch of the imagination and a couple of years ago every time I beat him he'd bitch me out about my play. Now I realize that he bitched me out because he's a good guy who had a rare passion for the game to see me (and others) step their game up. I originally thought that it was just sour grapes, but even Michael Jordan (aka The GOAT) was a sore loser who bitched out his teammates after a loss when he had a mediocre game even though he took most of the shots.

My explanation for not trying for CB setups when I should is that I feel more confident going for a knockdown followed by okizeme pressure or pressure feints since in my mind DOA is all about keeping the opponent guessing. My explanation for not following up launchers with the most damaging combos is that I am too overconfident, while that is true to a relatively small degree, it is a lie - the truth is that I expect the launchers to be held or blocked and when they are not I wake up to the reality that my opponent is defenseless in the air and stupidly consider that a semblance of victory as if the game consists of minigames.

If I had a quarter for every time I heard someone say something along the lines 'who follows up Lisa's BT 4+P launcher with 4H+K?' Truth is that when I don't expect to land that launcher my mind locks up preventing me from perform the best combo for character's weight class and when it's too late I figure well damn I can't just let them fall to the ground untouched; better play it off then start Carrera mindgames. It is this way of thinking that prevents me from doing a Shooting Star Press instead of a guaranteed Déjà Vu when I know it's going to land as a Hi Counter when I know that there is a chance that the Shooting Star Press can be broken which would leave me at a frame disadvantage at scary range.

Mods feel free to delete or move this if you find it inappropriate. Just trying to get some tips and pointers.

I only skimmed the post, but clearly you're not a scrub. I'm personally tired of people throwing that word around recklessly. A scrub is someone who plays by honor rules instead of using the tools available to him. For example someone saying "throws/holds/juggles are cheap! I won't use them!" That guy is totally scrubular. You simply do what you think will help you win. Nothing scrubby about that. Trying out unconventional or even sub-optimal tactics is not the mark of a scrub. It's all in the mindset.

For the record a scrub is not necessarily a new player or even a bad player. You can have a high level player be a damn, dirty scrub.

Yea I wouldn't call you a scrub. At least, not in the pure term. You've definitely constructed a mental prison for yourself that is holding you back in regards to certain setups, but you also appear to be self-aware of it and those reasons have nothing to do with fictitious rulesets that don't exist. More like genuine fear of repercussions, whether logical or not. The self-awareness is the important part.

I don't care who that guy was. If he couldn't approach you tactfully about your mistakes, you shouldn't take his advice, whether he was right or wrong. More people need to realize that kind of attitude is what's pushing many newcomers away from wanting to learn the game to begin with. Throw the thin-skinned/sensitive card all you want, but at the end of the day it's the goddamned truth. This doesn't work for everyone.

That aside, I'm glad you somehow managed to see past this particular person's harsh exterior. God knows I would've dismissed him for someone nicer if I was in your shoes. But you're no scrub in the slightest, you simply need a change of scenery, if you know what I mean.

EDIT: I also just realized you're on PSN, so I'll add you.
