Monitor?

Not sure if this is a great place to post this, but I'm wondering if I should invest in a low input lag monitor since I'm coming back to the game and I want to take the game even more serious this year

I play on an outdated 720p TV and I can't find any reviews on it to find out the input lag, but I know it has an 8ms response time and I plan on replacing it soon. My main concern is if I should make the investment in a monitor incase it will have a better effect on a serious playstyle

I included the poll to get a better understanding of what the community uses and I'd love to know some thoughts on the matter

I wish there was an option for both, since for now on PS3 I use a TV. A 27" CRT at that that I have had since 2005. For my PS4 however, I have to use my monitor which is a BenQ 27" gaming monitor.

Seems a monitor is high priority if I plan to improve..

As for the site, I was using it at first, but I found out it isn't as up-to-date and forgets some models that have even less input lag than the ones on the top of the list such as the ASUS VG248QE, but thank you

Also if anyone has a link to a suiting monitor it would help since right now I'm mostly leaning towards the model listed above

Might not be ideal for competitive play. Last I checked, very few 4K TVs are lagless (only the ASUS PB287Q rates as Excellent on DisplayLag).

oic, mine is samsung btw the frame movement seems faster than my old lcd tv. can't hardly notice the lag but i seem to win matches more frequently

I currently just use my monitor and switch between my computer and xbox cords. I tried getting a switch but it didn't work out right :/

Most everything newer they've released rates as "great" or "excellent."

I recently just bought the 22" Samsung UN22F5000 with 1080p res and 60hz refresh rate and the site provided above rates it as great.
It's nice, tbh.

It costed me about $180 USD off amazon.

I can say with confidence from personal experience that Samsung (now) at their worst is a 4 frame delay. Getting my latest HDTV (57") with all possible advanced filtering options off netted around 47ms delay. It was noticeable delay going from PC monitor to HDTV just dragging the mouse from one screen to the other. I took it back to the store for a swap of a different TV and tested all the store's TVs, and the Samsung was still the fastest (one TV was 136ms delay WITH "Game mode" enabled - 187ms without). So I ended up switching it out for the only TV I wasn't able to test it with: Sony Bravia being that it at least gave me more features for the same price as the Samsung. When I got home the Bravia tested at about 9ms delay to my surprise - I love it lol.

In short a monitor is going to always be a less laggy experience than an HDTV. There is a primary reason for it too: Televisions for a majority of the market are designed to be Passive experiences. You're meant to watch, not interact. So they overload TVs to fake their video feed as being better than the feed actually is, which increases clock cycles and time to display the feed. For example, taking a 60 fps feed and using your tv for "SmartMotion" or whatever so it bumps it to 120 fps will cause heavy delay. Why? Because In order to get that new frame of animation there that isn't in the original feed the TV has to wait to receive two frames of animation, then compile a new frame off those two, then show each in synchronous order.

Monitors for a majority of the market are designed for Active experiences. You're meant to interact, not watch. Mouse movement is the key because they plan on you using a mouse to navigate. I can't speak for touch-screen monitors here as I'd expect them to be a little more lax in that department but not completely unprioritized. Faking the computer's video signal is not a priority in that department.

So a TV would be a better investment for a PS4 in general, but picking up a monitor in the future would be a necessity in competitive DOA unless I can find a Sony TV with 9 ms delay under $1000

You can adapt to less delay in a tournament setting. Most do it fine. TVs generally work better for people who want to sit way back and play. Hell I use mine as a monitor for my computer. But if you have a small gaming space there's no reason not to go with a monitor. Cheaper too.
