DOA5LR Hayashi talks with Famitsu about the Soft-Skin Engine

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Yosuke Hayashi divulged information about the Soft-Skin Engine for Last Round. Talking primarily about the Breast Physics, costume creation, and skin effects (Sub-scattered shading) on both the men and women. Hayashi appears to say that Honoka was given the biggest breasts from the start so they could show off the engine. He even mentions how he talks about the improvements the men get with the engine but interviewers cut that information out when posting. In the interview he also goes over the staff's take on the costumes and engine, with a majority of the costume creators being female.

Q:compared to other genre, fighting game really focusing in character,
there lots character polygon+data, is that the point/reason to use it in fighting game rather than other genre?
A:Thanks to current gen console. like i said before, PS3 already reach limit when we create DOA5/U

Q:If there any possibilities to use soft-skin-engine in game with there lots character in screeen, like ninja gaiden
A:its possible with more tuning/costumization. its for use/shared in Koeitec games
if there producer request for it, then i will be happy to share it.

Q:Wow! so there is possibility more optimization/improvement right?
A: we gathered know-how, and its shared within koeitec games, so its quite possibility

Q:more detailed question, with completed soft-skin-engine, is there "somethings" that created from soft-skin-engine?
A:we add raidou to DOA5LR, and we also add honoka. We already decide to make honoka have the biggest boobs since start.
she created to make soft-skin-engine more easily viewable.
So we can say she created from it

Q:in DOA5LR, the most smallest boobs marie rose and the biggest boobs co-pairing together right?
wait, is soft-skin-engine also used in marie rose?
A: of course, its to show realistic way. Even the small boobs with bounce like real thing

Q:i want to continue more about this, what we can see from soft-skin-engine in male character or something changed ?
A:regarding male, usually every interview also been asking about it
but everyone usually cut it (lol. so can i explain about it?

Q:please explain it
A:Technically,there is visualization with skin shader,shadow
resolution(texture?) is also up so it showing better real skin
the sweat, the sweat that make the body looks wets, will give better real look of the muscle
with that in mean everyone is exposed with soft-skin-engine.

Q: BTW, when creating male character, what female staff said about important things in the character?
A: If we say in graphic, i think there some visualization part that looks "sexy" to female staff
In opposite side, female costume design that created by female staff, things that overlooked by male staff lots created by them
Thats what kinda mysterious.... and the fact is, Costume that released up to now, are designed mostly by female staff

Q: maybe there is somelike break unconsiously in opposite gender?
A: yeah probably. When female think about it, refreshing sexiness can be visuallize
Lately there often costume design that went i saw myself i said [cute! i want to dress them fast!]

Q: before dev. team finished Soft-skin-engine, how their motivation ?
A: there was one day, from director [Come here right now!]
showing character with soft-skin-engine [at last we achieve New Age-like visualization!]
thats is just before TGS, and after we announce DOA5LR
Seeing this soft-skin-engine completion, we absolutely need to show this in TGS

Q: TGS influence is really big right?
A: its really supprised me. at the same time i feel to endorse soft-skin-engine is right thing

Q: BTW, how much reference of real female movement that used?
A: we didnt look from real movement then do improvement
like gravure idol movie, after we see it, do those leaving image in head or not is what important.
its improtant to find gesture that leaving image on our head.
We trying to make realistic, but its not always good everything realitics either.

Q: in real, even with big boobs that bounce hard, we can't just looking at the boobs right? (lol
what is the real bounce, there are lots things we not know.
A: paradoxicaly, the boobs bounce in a match, even we the person that create it, is really hard to see the difference
because the camera is fast. But suchs lose or win scene, if u dont press button it will stay in that frame
in doa5LR that will do 100% work, i mean appreciation when seeing the "realistic boobs"

In match, because if not like "Legend setting" it barely visible, we recommend for media people to take shot/look on win/lose scene
※which mean useless-marketing-system ? right? ... just make Volleyball with lots gravure

Q:Until now released series, DOAXB .. DOA spinoff series...
is there a hint that this going to be released in future ?
A: The things is, there quite people in our staff are also want to create DOAXB
If there lots request for it, we will make consideration of it

Q:with DOA5 character model, of course there lots people that want see more the model
A: if that title(DOAXB) with soft-skin-engine on current gen console, maybe people dont want to see the real thing anymore yes? (lol
if we keep creating cute girls, then how it become end ?
there lots cute anime girls, but there still not many company creating cute 3D models with that in might, we take it as our strong point, and we will going to keep polishing our skill.
not only looks cute, but there is more like "charisma" that bring people together, is what really important

Q:like when first time seeing marie-rose, its really supprise me with her cuteness
And Musou series too, koeitec games really putting lots attention in female characters right?
A: Well its rival/competition between team, like when wang yi-like popular character appearing. It kinda give motivation to make better one

Q:it because keep polishing 3D character it become looks goods
A:regarding marie rose, actually she is not created for Arcade release
but that because there was no time, so we can only create one
its kinda bad to launch arcade with only that.
then we make something different, if in doa series there is bounce boobs in all girls
we create/debut small boobs girls
we happy people really support marie-rose, but now we got pressing to make honoka as famous as marie

That's interesting to hear, haha.

Actually female designers worked even to the DoAX series.

By the way thanks for posting it @Mr. Wah. I don't see anything surprising in this, we already know that the fanservice in DoA is something that has a plenty of focus in Japan, so inevitably there are precise decisions got only according to it. This is the reason because similar arguments are discussed only with Eastern interviewers, just because this is a main part of the entertainment in the work.

DoA has these 2 sides of the coin, fanservice and fighting game. The East seems influence the first aspect, the West the second one. Maybe it's possible that in Japan the new additions made to the gameplay aren't (or weren't) well received because apparently changing the gameplay making it too much complex. Exactly as a similar process happens here for the fanservice (at least from some vocal sources). Of course what make the things different is that the fighting side impacts only the reality of the game, while the fanservice become easily interest of the general Western reception even outside the community.

Anyway just my 2 cents.

Ah the old "women designed this so it's okay if it shows skin" excuse... I've heard it used for Bayonetta and bikini ZSS. But they neglect to say the art director is usually male, and the ultimate voice of what goes into the game.

Don't get me wrong I have no problem with skin showing, it's just a lame excuse.

And yes. I think the guys should get to be in X3, or even just make a cameo like there's an ice cream shop and Leon is the guy selling the ice cream and he says stuff like "why did i even sign up for this?" whenever you buy an ice cream.
oh yes, and he needs to be shirtless, have a bow tie neck and bunny ears and glasses

Hey, they talked about the duded for 2 paragraphs. We'll just put that one in the win column. lol

But, it would be interesting if what Hayashi said is true, and he does talk about the guys but it always gets cut out of the interview. (I still kind of doubt it's a huge part.)

If people care, the end part talking about Honoka said that her design came about because they realized that they didn't have a character with a school uniform as her primary costume. And that if you have a schoolgirl with huge boobs, you just have to make sure she has a white dress shirt for one of the outfits. Yep.

DOA could have taken the easy way out and just cut out fan service completely, but I'm glad it didn't. So what if female characters have big breasts and some revealing costumes? This game gets flack because it blurs the line between a casual fighter and a competitive one. Both sides can enjoy the game for what it is, but the primary focus of DOA is always going to be a fighting game. Casuals can choose sexy, revealing costumes while mashing buttons and doing cool looking shit, while competitive players actually study the game's mechanics, attend tournaments, while also using revealing costumes and showing people that the game can be competitive. Different strokes for different folks.

DOAX3 better have Pool, Chess and Bowling.
Pool sounds more in line with what's already at the casino.

The other two? Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... they should polish up the volleyball and jetski gameplay first. They had one too many side games up the ass as it is.

I'd rather have DOA Xtreme Beach Basketball. 3 on 3 with NBA Jam-like controls. Rachel would be my center, Ayane my point guard, Tina my small forward. Guys could be chosen for coaches and team buffs. Bass for defense, Ryu for movement and fundamentals, and Leon for strong offense.

Team Ninja has always brought out the good graphics in every generation. The graphics in 5 are already good and I'm not sure how much better they are in next-gen (to me I haven't played a next-gen game yet that made me say "wow this is truly next gen stuff"). I guess I'll have to wait and see on the 17th.
