Honoka player here, have been looking at strategies and they all have numbers on the combos for example 6pp or something like that. Can someone tell me what direction numbers belong to? And also how to deal with turtles that spam long range kicks (looking at you ayane).

As for dealing with long range kicks with Honoka... Well, it depends... We need more specifics to help you out. Generally, timing is everything. Be patient, don't rush in.

Maybe this will be a start... Moves that are useful at longer ranges are;
:236::P:
While running :H+K:
:H+K:
:3::H+K:
:236::K: (Unblockable, but be careful with this)
BT (back turned) :4::P+K:
:236::H+K: (careful with this too)
:4::6::P:

Ok. I want to make sure you know this, but holding mids in this game is different than highs and lows. With :7::h: you can hold both high kicks and high punches, with :1::h: you can hold both low kicks and low punches. For mids, you have to do :4::h: for punches and :6::h: for kicks. I'm an advanced player so I might see the options easily, and I don't know how useful these will be to you. I know I can execute these, but I'm not sure if you're there yet.

Ayane flying screw kick;
Either hold mid kick, or block it and grab low. Sidestepping also works, but is hard to time.

Kasumi's jumping knee;
Either hold mid kick, or block it and grab. Not sure about the sidestep.

Nyo Tengu's long range flying attack;
You have to learn the animation, and stop doing things that leave you unable to block at the moments the opponent is using it. Standing and blocking is the best option, although you can hold it with a mid punch and sidestep it too.

Rachel;
She's hard to fight for a lot of people because of her range. Honoka is going to have a hard time against her. You'll have to start learning which of Rachel's moves are safe and unsafe.

Unsafe moves give a guaranteed free grab. Make sure to capitalize on this. In order to really determine what is safe or not, you have to start learning about frame data... You might as well delve in and learn about advantage and disadvantage. Maybe this guide that I wrote a while back can help you...

Thanfs for the info I knew the tutorial told me to hold forward something but i didn't remember so I just kept doing back hold.. I can't seem to hold while blocking or I open myself or an ass kicking

should I finish the tutorial before going online? Lesson 20.6 is kicking my ass diagonals sucks on remote

There are quite a few good online players, so losing is unavoidable. Finishing the tutorial will definitely help you understand the game better. I learned DOA back in the day when it had no tutorial, so it can be done without it, although understanding certain things will take longer.

Huh ? Rachel has Range ?

Well I've been caught be the odd :6::6::K: and :8::K: and maybe that BT :2::K: once or twice.

But despite being so damn tall Rachel seems to have below average reach on all her other moves.

Hell she can barely combo from her :4::K: and :3::K:.... because her :6::P: is so short.

If you want a zoning nightmare try fighting Momiji.... she'l poke you all the way from Down Town.

Rachel's range is not like say Ayane, but she can easily keep Honoka out, while she is able to hit. Rachel's moves are quite heavy as well, so poor little Honoka can get smashed around easily lol. Especially on the low side, Rachel has some pretty good moves for the mid range.

Btw, another good ranged move from Honoka is her :236::P+K:. You can't just throw it out though, because it's easy to see coming.

Well she always seems to hit me from a distance I can't reach

Like @NightAntilli said.... if you're playing Honoka then you're going to have a different experience..... I started playing :tina: again I noticed I'm getting counter hit from miles away.

So uhm yeah..... its character specific.

Was honoka a bad choice to main?
Well... Not necessarily. It depends on how you look at it. You will have a steeper learning curve, because you have to work a lot harder in order to get into your opponent. On the long term, you will have superior spacing, offense and footsies compared to a lot of players. The trick is to not get frustrated before then, and in a game like DOA, it's very easy to get frustrated, let alone with a character with such a weakness. Honoka's trick is getting in. Once you're in, she has quite an easy time if you know what you're doing, and the trick is not letting the opponent turn the tide back against you.

If you want an easier time in general, I'd suggest you start with Hitomi. Not the best character, but she's a well rounded character with no real weaknesses that will help you cover the basics of the game. There's a reason she's the main character used in the tutorial.

The reason why I picked honoka was because her combat is stylish as @$%# Hitomi feels so bland, my second choice was either mila or pai but trying to hold keeps getting me killed :(

And if any one can post a gif of the jumping around honoka does after dragon kick like Jann Lee I'd appreciate it

They are all characters that have their struggles.

Mila has very few moves compared to the rest of the cast. So mixing up is more difficult. It's very easy to become predictable with her.
Pai is a VF character. Her strings are straightforward, but her stun game needs to be quite extensive since her juggles are not that strong, and she has some very obvious weaknesses that other players can exploit.
