How do you play on controller? Pad, Analog Stick, or both?

All I know is I follow the convo. Just going with the flow. I like to think Doa has always had dynamic topics.
I use the thumbsticks most of the time, it feels more liberating.
I only use the directional pad when i'm playing my PlayStation 2(since Sony decided to be funny and not make thumbsticks useful for many fighting games).

PS pads to me. Stick just isn't for me. Been trying for years but just can't ever get comfortable with it.

Same here, dpad on PS3 and stick on 360. It's funny, the 360 has a useless dpad but the PS3 has useless thumbsticks, and it's probably all because neither company wants to swallow their pride and blatantly copy the other. Until Nintendo came along with the WiiU pro pad lol

I'm used to the Xbox Dpad for DOA, the 360 one has kinda sucked unless it's the one with the transforming Dpad, that one's really good but extremely fragile. The + actually popped into my face while I wasn't even using it. Been looking into other methods of control. I'm worried about the PS3 side of things. I LOVE the Dpad for things like 2D fighters but I absolutely hate everything else about the controller; stick resistance, stick placement, R2/L2 and their weak springs, ultra-sensitivity, face-button depth and resiliance, weight, uncomfortable design, I honestly loathe the DS3 save for 2D fighters. I recently picked up the PowerA PS3 Pro controller for $10 at Toys 'R Us since it's designed like a 360 controller and it's actually quite good for what it is but it's got dead zones in the sticks and I'm thinking it might not work for what I need.
So it's either get comfy with the DS3 (which I really don't want to) or move to stick and get over the odd feeling of using a stick for DOA after having only used a pad for it for all these years. If DOA5 comes out on the WiiU, I'm gonna be in heaven with that pro pad.
I'd still say that even the transforming Dpad isn't great, though it certainly is leagues better the the original 360 Dpad. And yes, it's very fragile. I've had two of them fall off the controller mid-match.

I have the same problem of the Dpad friction burns to the skin after doing wavedashing/backdashing/QCF motions when playing Tekken all day. I now use the Dpad wearing a silk glove. This maintains skin sensitivity, protects from friction burns and allows you to abuse the Dpad QCF motions. I got the slik glove from Ebay, Jasmine Silk. If you can't get a silk glove then a regular cheap £1 magic (one size fits all) glove does the job too. I recommend changing the glove plus washing it frequently, after its saturated in sweat. The sweat adds friction. Or change it when it begins to tear on the thumb surface of the glove.
I tried the Hori Arcade stick but its bloody loud when ur inputting several commands per seconds and it will take a big effort to learn.
Silk glove + dpad buttons covered in cellotape = less friction
I tried other things too:
Vasaline: gets messy and traps skin debris/dirt more
Slick tape: this was pointless

DOA has thus far been the absolutely easiest fighter to play Stick with. I have struggled getting down stick for years on other fighters (like Tekken) since I just didn't know how to get a grasp for its control (or even sure I had a quality stick which was hindering me) and this didn't help with the advanced movement commands required to play the game.
But I used one of Gill's sticks for DOA3.1 two weeks ago and it felt very natural there. The game speed and command execution seems to naturally fit it better than on pad. So I'm going to see if my crappy T6 Wireless Stick and DOA5 will be good practice for getting down stick too.
